    Spin-off thread from blactor's.

Just wondering how many of you go by your full legal name, or like me go by a shortened version of your full name, or perhaps a nickname or your middle name.

I am known professionally and to anyone who meets me as the shortened version of my full name, the only people who call me by the full version really are my parents or grandparents. Though I obviously do use it on all official documents.

Most people say my full name unless its my near or close friends....Then they call me 'Taz' I've had so many nic names...

My full name is rather long but that usually is with my title and middle.

Everyone calls me by my last name. Even friends I've known for a while don't know my first name.

Professionally: no. Nobody cares enough or has the time to read that many letters on letterhead, business cards, tattoos, and skywritten messages by prop plane.

Socially: "nickname"/middle name (unclear on the concept if a middle name can be a nickname) is it. It helps segregate work and not-work, a line which has all but dissolved in every other conceivable way.

The vast majority of the gay mafia use their full name even on facebook - prim and proper, or unnecessary and rife for social mining information?

It's actually fun to think about what people actually do call me. Though I don't think they use one more over the other. I get called by my full name a lot (first and last), usually when they are pissed at me. Also with my initials, and finally with a shortened version of my first name. I also have specific names that only my parents call me, that have the most embarrassing stories behind them, haha.

My 1st name only has 1 syllable, not sure how to shorten it. Regarding my surname, it's French & no-one knows how to pronounce it - I normally answer the pause after mr.

I go by a nickname or a shortened version of my name. My full name is too long to say. Needless to say I hate writing out checks.

    Yes. Longer is always better.
And mine is quite a mouthful.

I never introduce myself by my full first name. That name only exists for legal purposes (documents & shit). Otherwise, I always introduce by my nickname and have people call me by that name.

Do you go by your full legal name?

No, I usually drop the middle name, even the initial. I have such an unusual last name that I see no need for a middle. No one will confuse me with someone else.

My first and last initials are RP, which is kinda balanced, and I put them on many things. (Pic below)

On formal legal documents I do sign my middle initial, or even my full middle name if required. But otherwise never.

Here's the cap of a fountain pen I had made for me as a gift to myself 20 years ago, when I was promoted Army Colonel:

Professionally: I'll use my full name. Most of my family uses it too. When I'm in trouble, it's first and middle, which is pretty lengthy. But that doesn't happen anymore really.

Socially: Usually the shortened version or a nickname. Occasionally my full name.

I go by my first name as it is quite short and people who know me well call me by my nickname which is my last initial.

i go by my middle name, and i have never gone by my first name. i do have to place it on almost all official documents, but if anyone were to call me by my first name, no one would know who they were talking about.

so call me nick, if you ever talk to me

Well, considering mine together sounds like a porn stars name, I like to keep it as just "Trevor".

the only person who calls me by my real name is my family (and even then my sister has shortened it to D) and israelis who discover it and refuse to go by my preferred name. i think few people even realize that robby isn't even remotely close to my real name (well, there are the letters r and o somewhere in it). then there's the fact that i have a pen name... which confuses people even more.

My name is Julius. I love my name; its a solid one. Friends call me by my name or variations like Jules, Julio...just don't call me Julian. Can't stand that one for some reason. The family simply calls me Jay.

Well, I've always felt a man's name is his own property. Whatever he tells me he goes by, that is what I use.
