That's the title of an editorial in today's Oregonian.

The comments section is the usual cat-fight, name-calling and finger pointing, which I'm old fashioned enough to think gets us nowhere - or maybe just more nowhere than we are.

Clearly it does seem that we have a dysfunctional government, clogged with partisanship, corporate influence, Big Money, debt, wars - you name it.

So my question is this: what, in practical steps can be done?

I've seen mention of Rebuild The Dream http://rebuildthedream.com/ - does anyone know anything about this organization?

Putting partisanship aside for a moment,- it really does seem to be time for some new approaches.

Are there any ideas out there, I mean new, good ideas that could go somewhere?

I've got an idea, get money out of politics and lobbyist out of the halls of congress.

Pass a law where all political races are to be financed by a public fund, continue giving deductions for donations but all donations are to go into a political fund to be divided as specified by the donor for each office as they open up, whether it be for congress, the senate or the office of the Presidency.

No more funds to be given directly to any candidates, no more politicians spending their time soliciting funds and making deals for those funds. (outlaw direct fundraising) all funds must go through the public fund only and are to be totally voluntary. Cap the use of personal funds for each candidate at some reasonable specified amount to avoid only the rich being able to run for public office.

Create a Peoples lobby funded by a percentage of political donations, that is to be used for the peoples lobby to be present the peoples perspective of any law being considered, at public comment forums where Corp, special interest lobbyists and etc., are also given equal time to present their causes. Outlaw private deal making by lobbyists, outlaw all direct donations from these groups too, Lobbyists will only be allowed to contact politicians at the public comment forum where all have equal time with the peoples lobby. the halls of congress are no place for lobbyists, outlaw their private audience with politicians.

Pass a law that no congressman, senator or president, is permitted to work for any lobbying firm PERIOD, no exceptions ever.

Ya ya, Its a Utopian idea, but our politicians would sure be better able to make independent decisions free of ties to donors if such an Idea were law, and no lobbyists would be given any more time to influence politicians than would the peoples lobby.

I'd agree with most of that, and throw in term limits. But the question was more HOW do we get there?
