Well Saturday is the big day Derby goers.. the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is about to get underway... and "Big Brown" is apparently the favorite this year!

I've always loved the event. While I was in high school, college and law school, I taught horsemanship and this was one of the events I always wanted my students to watch and comment. One of my barn assistants even made a framed tribute to the race.
I have never attended, but I will. Its fantastic.

I just wish we could have a Triple Crown winner this year, that is, to win the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont Stakes and the Preakness!

Go Go Go!!! Grab yourself a "Mint Julip" and enjoy!

Some of our family used to attend this - and other races at Santa Anita and Saratoga. It was fun - I have good memories. One aunt and uncle had race horses for several years.

    What's your Mint Julip recipe?

A shot of Bourbon, a splash of water in a collins glass full of crushed ice with a teaspoon of sugar and bruised mint sprigs is the usual recipe.

The Bourbon must be real Kentucky Bourbon.

    Drink with a straw.

Drink enough of these and you won't care who wins the race.

According to the Kentucky state song "My Old Kentucky Home", "in summer the people are gay".

    So get lucky in Kentucky.
