Ho humm! Another GAY movie about GAY guys being GAY for a GAY audience. While I'm sure the story is told very well through great acting and directing, I feel that once you've seen one movie like this, you've seen them all. This is one of the reasons I no longer attend Out on Film (Atlanta's LGBT Film Festival) because it's the same sort of movies every year. Why can't someone make a movie like Godzilla in which the main character just happens to be gay? I've seen quite a few gay movies in my time during the '90s and early 2000s, so this movie isn't really anything new or different. It's just a love story about two men. I think just because it is new and it has good looking men, some gay guys will go see it anyway.
Overall, I would feel differently about this movie if it had come out in, say, 1995. Back then, a lot of guys, including myself, were in the closet and desperately needed to see a good quality gay film that we could relate to without stereotypes. Weekend is too little too late. In 1991... it would have been perfect. In 2011... it's just late. I want to see a gay guy help Godzilla to fight Mothra, or a gay character negotiate peace talks with extraterrestrial beings, or a gay guy turn into a giant spider and eat people. Give me something different!!!
