Threads are Disappointing?

    Hey Guys,

At the moment, I really struggle to find a topic that I want to respond to. From my perspective there doesn't seem to be as many fun, interesting and insightful threads that discuss issues. There seems to be a proliferation of personal threads about a single member or, alternatively, threads that merely describe something that happened to the OP rather than promote a discussion about general themes that arise out of that experience.

Just wondering if anyone else was feeling like the threads were going downhill a bit in the last few months? If so, why?

Before flaming me, I do realise that this isn't contributing to 'making things better'. This isn't a hand-wrining woe-is-me topic, nor one that intends to name names. It's a positive thread about identifying things that need improvement.

I'm wanting to gauge if it's just me, or others are feeling like the forums are a bit lack luster.

    Any suggestions?

that's prety much RJ in general.

It's rare that I find a thread I want to take part in and I keep my distance of the politics, religion and so on.

No flame...but this is a comment that has been tossed around before. Over the past 4 plus years I have been on RJ....summers seem to become a little stagnant on the forums, as members are out, away from their indoor activities....it will change, sort of like the weather in the midwest USA...give it a few minutes, it will be different! icon_biggrin.gif

It happens sometimes. Just lurk a few times a day, or maybe take a couple days off the forums. There'll eventually be interesting threads again.

Eh, when you have the same people posting in the same forum for a long time things tend to get personally themed.

I've been on a ton of forums and all of them are pretty much the same.

Oh, wait, my bad. There are the forums whose thread titles may fool the unsuspecting poster in, but it is exactly the same as the other forums. All personalized threads blah blah blah.

It's also interesting to point out that the longer you stay attached to a particular forum you start to see how repetitious the ideas present themselves. You just sorta tend to see the same stuff over and over because, well, it's the same people.

Not a bad thing if those people are too terrible. This forum has some good peeps in it. Yay! New ideas will present themselves in time.

Yes and no. And yes. And no.

The dynamics that arise, the topics, conversations, the back and forth, are a product of the active member base. This is true for any message board. Whether one deems it the optimal combination of members or not, the truth is the most prolific members are what keep any board alive.

Are there some annoying, one-sided and repetitive threads? Yes. Do I think if the community as a whole took a serious moment of introspection about what they could do to make more productive threads that it would benefit the board? Absolutely!

Is this moment of introspection going to happen? No.

Should there be thread police trying to get these members to post something else? No.

It boils down to it is what it is. I don't want to see another bacon thread either. But the solution is indifference, sadly. Thread no likey, thread I no posty. Board crappy beyond what I can tolerate, board I make the choice if I want to keep belonging to.

Yeah... the threads and the people these days aren't exactly... thought provoking or even mildly interesting. It's like a lot of the members have exhausted themselves and turned into the exact same thing they said they once placed spite in. People are STILL playing the "here to troll" card which is great and all, but eventually that stops or they exhaust the site itself and it's no longer fun even to them.

It's becoming a burned out forum with little to no regulation, intellectual value or intriguing posts besides .gifs and VOTE FOR threads which are tired. Hence why so many have already bowed out and members continually leave. I'm not even participating in over half the threads I would've mildly cared about before. The care is leaving for most of us and it's visible. :/

The crappy thing is, I guess, that if you're feeling uninspired by the forums, it's probably pretty likely that the people you like to 'read' are feeling bored too and won't post...

This. Also, even the most mild of statements gets attacked as if it is a threat on the posters life. Im probably more part of the problem here when it comes to this kind of crap then the solution, really, but to be honest I got tired of posting facts with my opinions because no one really listened to it. Except one guy, the conversation went like this:
"You can post some research to back up your 'facts'"
    **links 3 articles**
"Great, now I will see if my side can come up with any research to support my belief. I will now block you so we have no further interaction on this site."
    Nerd rage extreme to me!

So, to you, realjock, I ask what is the point? Why would I have a civil discussion with people when in all honesty it doesnt do anything? No one is open to ideas being discussed, no one wants to change their mind, and every interesting topic gets turned into huge flame wars! Even that kid who posted about the time when he was uncomfortable with the personal trainer touching him, what did everyone do? We bashed the shit out of the 20 year old instead of offering him real advice! Jesus christ people! Doesnt anyone take a step back and think about what kind of community we are building here?

Ok, now for the chainers mask to come back on, so no more mr nice chainers!

Edit: Side note, Cold this is a good thread!

Great topic. It was about time someone brings this up.

The truth is, we need a cool idea of a thread. Personal video greeting are always fun. Andrew had the idea of critiquing each other's voice, that was fun too. I for one, do not like "poll threads" because I feel that people don't really read them anyway. Discussion threads tend to go long (in single post contents, as well as # of posts in a thread), and with the spamming messages and crossfires between members, it's really difficult to find ANY insightful posts. It's like you have to get through layers and layers of garbage/shit that you don't wanna read in order to find that ONE insightful comment. It is pretty sad and frankly, exhausting as well.

And of course when troll attacks, then a whole flame war breaks out, and you're watching the drama unfolding, and the whole thread is derailed. It is not ideal, but know this, almost all gays have some degree of ADHD so every thread is bound to have some derailing. I'm sorry but I'm guilty of that too. Sometimes I derail my own threads. *blush*

But ya know, it also depends on the OP (aka thread-master). Some are very good at monitoring their own threads and will remind the posters that they are derailing. I think in a relatively unmoderated forum like RJ, the responsibility of monitoring each thread falls on the OP. If the OP allows the thread to be completely derailed or worse yet, becoming a flamewar zone, the OP is to blame for that. You created the thread...you should see to it that it dies a peaceful death, not going out with a huge bamm.

TheGuyNextDoor saidHere's my BEST example of how a thread gets derailed by total Crap.
Did it really have to go there? Me thinks not, and that's why it's such a short thread.
Some guys here,,,,*huumm humm* can be real thread killers trying to make sure they get the last word in.....icon_rolleyes.gif

Ok, one thanks for fixing the thread, 2 bitch created a sock account, of course Im going to call him out. Edit: Not only did he create a sock account to attack me, he created a sock account so that he can call me a fag boy without any repercussions from his actions. Im sorry, he started that shit.

    3) thank you southbeach for being part of the problem, and not part of the solution.

They tend to come and go honestly. We've had this sort of discussion before. It really is a mix. Wait a few days and it will probably shift.

I think it results from a small core of some members with a lot of time on their hands who crave attention and have found that bad behavior or useless or redundant messages or threads is the easiest way to get the attention. Other guys who are amused will egg them on, and the cycle continues.

Quit complaining. Real Jock is cheaper than a counselor and you won't be afraid of meeting other RealJockers at the grocery store tomorrow.

Go do pushups and post your numbers in the pushups topic.
