What should be done about it, if anything? Can we afford to keep putting money into it? Is it time for an overhaul?

We should probably save it and do what Paul Ryan is suggesting, but personally i would be fine if there was a cut off date at some point and I'm included in the people who end up losing both social security and medicare. At some point in time the selfishness needs to end and people need to realize that both are unsustainable. We need to redo the whole thing and have it so that people have their own money put into the system for their future..., if you don't put money in then you don't get it back. Pure and simple. Not this one generation paying the other ponzi bullcrap.

Our nation is doomed though because people will vote for what is in their best interest and even if it means bankrupting everything and causing a world of greater hurt they will do it anyway, so I think ultimately every country is headed toward being a Greece or worse. It's basically like forcing a Conservative outcome but with a world a greater hurt and suffering instead of a little hurt but creating sustainability.

Increase the age requirements by a couple years since we are living longer, and increase the threshold up to $120,000, for deductions from income for SS. ( I believe the current threshold is between $98,000 and $102,000, I've seen both figures used)

SS is not a Federal Budget line Item so it is not going to bankrupt the country. It is funded by deductions from income, and one of the best programs going for US Citizens. The projected shortage of funds, depending on who you want to believe is several years off, but tweaking the program as above which has been studied out and proven to be a workable Idea, would solve the problem.

SS has enemies amongst the Republican party who want to make the problem appear much bigger than what it is in order to do away with it. This started during Reagans time and rear's 'its ugly head' by republicans every few years. I guess it works too well and does too many people too much good, so some just cannot stand the thought of something coming from Government that actually works.

Republicans, Like to tell us that government doesn't work, then they work hard to get elected and prove to us by the policies they enact, just why government doesn't work. LOL

A bit of a caveat here .... There's voting for what's in your best interest
................................... and then there''s voting AGAINST your best interest

Well, we need to definitely have some sort of safety net programs for the helpless and needy, I just don't like the way it is set up currently with SS and Mcare.

What is there not to like about it? The main issue with medicare is shady doctors and hospitals who make up charges for treatment not conducted. Medicare works pretty damn well.

No offense, but who are you to feel your opinion is more valid than others simply because you don't "like" something. Have you even ever used medicare?
