I would like to suggest to Chris that: anyone on your block list be prevented from seeing a thread one originates, allowing us to be our own gatekeepers of whom we associate with and whom we invite to associate with us.
    It would:

    1. Immediately stop the trolling activity, and improve civility around here.

    2. Reduce the amount of intervention Chris need to do himself. No more petty squabbles - just a few trolls grumbling for a while they aren't free to stomp around and take dumps in the middle of everyone's party.

Each thread can be likened to a meeting room in a convention centre; Chris has a great convention centre here and we are privileged to be able to join his club. but it is a privilege and not a right.

A lot of us really enjoy using the rooms to talk about all sorts of things - but we have no locks on the doors.

Just being a clubmember does not give anyone the right to troll a discussion.

We should be able to have discussions with friends without disruptive people.
They only would be blocked out of some peoples' discussion threads for being a dick or disruptive. There would be accountability for what you say and how one behaves.

Words have consequences and if one picks the wrong ones consistently, the disruptors will find they are seeing fewer and fewer threads with interesting titles to enter as more and more block them.

The community voices its disapproval and exercises corrective action automatically through gradual de facto isolation and ultimately total exile unless they learn a better way to interact with people.

It would inevitably improve behaviour around here and it should not be difficult algorithm to implement: If you appear on the OP's block list, you don't see any threads they originated, but everyone else can.

    Who would object to that?

Oh some might bitch about Freedom of Speech - to which I respond - Freedom of Association means I DON'T have to associate with you if I don't want you - be civil and MAYBE we'll let you join this particular discussion.

I like it, even though it means there will be some posts I'm not going to see I'm sure

Not really, the people who like the trolling will all be in the wing of the convention centre we will call Animal Wing, ruled over by the Lord of the Flies. You can go slumming there whenever yo like - but the choice to venture into the ghetto will be yours - it will no longer be coming to you uninvited.icon_lol.gif

Why rename the News & Politics forum?

It is this section that needs this feature enhancement.

It will prevent people from getting fed up and bailing on the site - which is important for Chris. (less work, keep the traffic)

No danger the trolls will ever go away completely, they will just be contained and will no longer be running amok.

You could go and play with them whenever you want. Poke them with sticks. But stand back, they fling their poo.

yourname2000 saidI really don't see that solving anything, though. It would just be used by the right-wing trolls to block all the people who show them to be racist, elitist cunts which would then allow the right-wing trolls to troll with imputnity. (Remember that rentboy thread the other day? --wow...a real RJ high point. icon_rolleyes.gif )

And it just seems kinda, well, whiny for lack of a better word. I have facebook when I want to talk to people who love me and realize that I'm the most awesome, gorgeous and important person in the world. I come to RJ to listen to crazy people who tell that me none of that is true.

None of these trolls can actually "get me"....anything they type just reveals their trolly selves, which shows everyone else in the thread how really and truly amazing I am in comparison. People really need someone in their lives like me to love, so I think the trolls are actually providing a valuable service by making me look so damn good.

Thank you trolls! You're doin' God's work!

Let me bask in your sunshine so bend over and spread em.. LOL

Why don't you just use the ignore feature and encourage your friends to either do the same or not to quote the messages from posters you find objectionable?

They do tend to stir the muck and keep things lively.

"Ignore His Posts" works for me. I then allow others who are worthy of my eyes and my time to pass.

How do you use facebook to have interactive discussions with groups?

Oh right - I remember you now , yes, not surprising you would object or consider it whiny to be prevented from crashing discussions.

RJ does not work like facebook.

Don't be a total arsehole, be a man and take ownership of your behaviour and one woudn't even see any change.

The only ones who would be affected in any way that detracts from their pleasure are the disruptors. Nor will they be able to detract from others'enjoyment any more . you'd have to be pretty damned sefish to object to that.

Why make it such a chore for us to have to discipline a whole group rather than create a simple mechanism, to isolate the disruptor (time out)

Clearly you cannot control even yourself (for example) - how can we control a whole group? It makes more sense to isolate the disruptor.

If you cannot live with that - try a crash course in social interaction.

The irony here is I was just discussing the concept without interjecting any personal or political issues, but you couldn't resist taking a swipe, could you? In fact, I wouldn't mind this feature at all because I could have discussions with other like-minded intelligent guys, including a few civil guys with other opinions, without much of what is ultimately unwanted interjections.

    Good.

    we are totally agreed then.

I submitted this suggestion to Chris.

I'm sure your agreement will bring others too from your camp.

Let's not be disingenuous we all know I consider you to be one of the worst offenders since you demonstrated you do not read posts or listen to clips, just argue.

You lost the last vestiges of your credibility then and I refuse ever to listen to you again. So this proposed enhancement would improve both our enjoyment experience of RJ.

Like i said - only the people who tend to piss off others will ever notice anything. It will be invisible o anyone who does not offend.

I'm prepared to take that chance that I would find more threads I would be willing to participate in than I lose access to. Any I lose access to - I deserve to lose access to for not comportying myself appropriately.

I am afraid of no negative impact on me by this. I am a big boy. i can take the consequences of my own begaviour without whining.

The disruptors will find their own threads visited only by the like minded unless and until they find a more socially acceptable manner.

I see only wins to this.

You're pretty closed minded, but you don't even realize. You also did a very classless thing by bringing up your version of a disagreement we had in a different thread where I had not previously participated. To explain to you, the reason that is classless is because I was not participating, it was likely I would have never seen the thread and had the opportunity to respond. In the discussion in question, I presented a very civil, logical point of view, but you could not even respect the different viewpoint. As the other poster indicated, you have your own limitations, and not interacting with you in the future will increase the quality of my involvement here.

I closed my mind to you on thaat occasion, and you know it. I heard you out with great patience at great length at every opportunity but as soon as you started bullshitting - it was over. I made that rule clear from the start.

Yes I am totally classless for holding you accountable for your own stubborness. and behaviour.

You are a victim because I say you have to act with integrity or I won't talk to you. I can live with that.

You don't discuss other members adversely in a thread where they are not participating. Even in this thread you couldn't avoid showing your colors by going negative. Nothing but a troll, not a very smart one at that, and I will have nothing further to do with you. Good riddance.

you were actually just an exemplar, if you read it; it was your own conscience that made it sting. (again QED)

Just think - soon you won't even be able to see this thread any more if Chris implements the suggestion. you have to admit that will improve your RJ experience. you will never be seeing anything I originate, or probably vice versa (I hope)
But I can take care of it the other way with Ignore his posts.

The problem with this idea is that it could be used for even more malicious trolling.
Imagine blocking someone and then creating a thread to talk trash or spread lies about that person. He would not see what was posted about him and not be able to respond.

Really, the best way to stop the trolls is with a/some moderator(s)

Not such a great idea, mostly because I agree with Ermine and it is also pretty useless blocking the trolls. All they need is a new sock account to post their bile in the very threads you want to hide from them.

When you find yourself having to devise these complicated measures it means you're on this site too much. Take a break. Don't take it seriously.

When I want to talk with people who are of "like mind" I go into the bathroom, sit on the toilet...and talk to myself.

Ironically, I am watching "Trollhunter" right now. icon_biggrin.gif

I agree with above.... this is a "forum" don't take it all so seriously.

As far as sabotaging my own thread - irrelevant to the suggestion. There is recent bad history with one and long time history from the the other. I merely pointed out they were being disingenuous by feigning innocence.

So stick to the sugggestion itself - Tell us how how this would negatively affect you?

People posting nasty threads about you you can't see and respond to? Others will see it and report it with the existing means of reporting that and it gets taken care of. What is the next objection?
Please be specific and we can examine each potential drawback.
