I am interested in taking a protein powder. It seems there are hundreds of them out there. Does anyone recommend a certain one?

I recommend saving money by buying pure protein powder in bulk from one of the online vendors. I buy mine from:

    http://www.trueprotein.com/

The one I get is "Whey Protein Isolate Cold-Filtration."

The best that I have ever tasted and
it's also a high quality protein powder is
    Beverly International's Ultimate Muscle
Protein. The Cookies and Cream one is the
absolute best!...Tastes like a Dairy Queen
treat. It's a protein you look forward to
drinking unlike most of them that you try
to gulp down. You can get it at
    www.prosouce.net.....Enjoy!

    I buy this from proteinfactory.com:

    http://tinyurl.com/2e4al7

You can mix a lot in a small amount of water with a spoon and down the stuff quickly. You can also custom-order protein factory's stuff with your choice of supplements, sweeteners and flavors.

I'm lactose intolerant and this particular whey does not bother me at all.

It's pretty awesome how they have all these options for sweeteners, and none of them is "sugar."

Despite the fact that you have to consume protein with some carbohydrate simultaneously for your digestive system to optimally incorporate it.

I actually ended up buying ON (optimum nutrition) 100% Whey gold standard Mint Chocolate.

The flavor is great mixed with milk and I am seeing gains.

I also tried the syntha 6 protein from BSN. I thought it tasted way too sweet. Plus a serving of it is about 3 times what the ON protein is.

Just bought some of the no xplode and will see what it does for me.

Definetly a fan of Optimum Nutrition's Whey Protein (you might just see a small "ON" on the label, that is it). Don't go for any of the weight gainers or the gimmicks at GNC, bodybuilding.com is a great site for ordering and better pricing than GNC (even with the "gold card discount" which is a crock).

    Sorry for the quasi-preaching-rant :-)

I second Petey's suggestions. Just stay away from anything strawberry flavored, it tastes terrible! Variations on chocolate are best.

try dpsnutrition.com most of the time cheaper than bodybuilding.com unless you have a 10% off coupon which they email sometimes

i am a big fan of eating clean so I would go with a whey isolate that is not sweetened or sweetened with stevia. So many protein have more crap in them than a candy bar. Bluebonnet is a great protein, not cheap but very clean and it is gluten and soy free. I also recommend not eating gluten or soy. The best thing i ever did for myself was giving up gluten.

    Brand or powder?

For brands I highly recommend Optimum Nutrition.
Consistently high quality and also happens to be especially well priced. Consistently does well under independent testing (Including during the recent heavy metal debacle). It's also among the most popular brands among body builders (take a look at BodyBuilding.com's forums and product rankings for example).

As for kind of powder, that's a whole 'nother thread. The short version: for before/after workouts you want a fast acting protein, most likely whey. For supplementing during the day or before going to bed (when you enter a long fasting period) you want a slow burning protein like casein. Egg protein is also good during the day.

Personally, I primarily use the Naturals line of Optimum Nutrition products, whey and casein. (The naturals line doesn't have any artificial sweeteners, not even stevia [it used to have the later].) As I post this I'm drinking a mix of whey and casein, and easting a chocolate thing for some sugar and fat.

You can pick it up wherever you like, but I'll also add that I always purchase in bulk from DPSnutrition.net . So, at least one you know what you want (after trying some from wherever), that's a great place to buy them; much cheaper than I've found anywhere else (with occasional exceptions where it's merely equal).

    GL.

    [Edit: Whoah. Thread necromancy. Still...]

I know! What's up with that?!
As mentioned above though, see the optimum nutrition naturals line now.
