Hi, a friend and I are going on a 7 day trip to NYC in late December and need some lodging advice. We want to stay in Manhattan preferably around the gay district, but we don't know the city very well. We want the cheapest place to stay in but one that is not infested with roaches and shit like that. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I figured asking gay guys would probably be a smart thing to do..
    Thanks guys

Will your stay include New Year's Eve or conclude prior to that? As far as cheap and roach and bed-bug free in Manhattan, that will be hard to find. Expect to pay close to $200 a night at the lower end for a decent place in a decent area.

Check www.airbnb.com for private apartment rentals. I'm sure there will be hosts traveling away from the city and plenty of places available.

You can filter down by price and amenities, but the main neighborhoods downtown will be more expensive than if you stay further uptown or in a borough.

There are many "gay districts" in NYC. Since I don't know what type of bar you like to visit, I can only guess, but Hell's Kitchen tends to appeal to a 20's crowd. Look for places west of 7th Ave (so 7th - 10th Aves), and below 59th Street (anywhere from 14th - 59th St makes up Chelsea / Hell's Kitchen)

My boyfriend and I are moving to NYC on Tuesday, and we're having to stay in a hotel for a couple of days until we find an apartment.

I think we're paying about 150 a night, and we're in a crappy place by JFK.

Good luck finding somewhere in Manhattan for around $200 ;)

Stay at Hotel 17 it's a great hotel and walking distance to Splash Club. It's close to Chelsea & Union Square. The address is 225 East 17th St NY. 10013. www.hotel17.com. I paid $120 a night and it's clean & w/ air & bathroom.

It's between 17th & 3rd Ave. I'm staying here right now and heading to London for 2 weeks vacation. Bummer Hurricane Irene ruined my vacation here all the bars & clubs are closed. The whole city was deserted no transportation & most restaurants & businesses are close till tomorrow.

Yeah check this out this is w real awesome hotel.Walking distance to NYC Sports Clubs, 24HrFitness & tons of restaurants around the corner.

    Cheers,
    Franck

Use kayak.com and hotels.com to establish a baseline. I don't know how you define cheap, but what wMatt says is about right. There's some places between 8th and 9th aves along 37th and 38th that are decent. One has a nice rooftop that will be useless to you in December icon_smile.gif But that area is near Hell's Kitchen, a densely gay area.

Whatever you pick, make sure to look at the subway lines it's near. It's best to be near places that have multiple lines in one area. Oh and buy a weekly unlimited MTA pass for the subway/bus.

3 years ago during the same time you are going I stayed at The New Yorker Hotel

I really liked the central location and the hotel.

I stay at the Milford Plaza at 8th and 44th. Great location! Its a huge old 1920's 1200 room hotel. Nothing fancy (yet, they are renovating and upping their rates) but clear, comfortable (great beds!) and private bathrooms. Cool elevators too (You punch in the floor you want and it tells you what elevator to get on, each one is an express).

    I was there 2 weeks ago, paid $81, 81, 84, 110, 140 per night (tues-sun).

Everyone keep in mind it looks like he is going to be there around New Year's Eve and rates are going to be higher at the end of December and before Christmas.

By the gay district, do you mean the East Village, West Village, Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, or Times Square? LOL.

I've stayed at the Comfort Inn on 46th just east of Broadway for $145 a night. I've also stayed at a place on 97th called the Royal Park Hotel. The Comfort Inn is nice, but the rooms are really small. It is very convenient to everything though. The Royal Park is a little more outside midtown and more (shall we say) basic, but it's not bad for the price, $110 a night.

Wow thanks guys for your responses.. Well honestly I haven't really done any research on this of yet.. but i like your response! The friend i am travelling with is from Barcelona so I would know more about NYC than he does haha.

I'd like to stay around Hells Kitchen and will definitely check out the royal park. So how much more expensive will it be if I am planning on going around christmas time?

All I can say is book early if you are going to go in December before Christmas or over New Year's Eve.

You probably don't want to stay off the islands during your stay... no slight on Jersey. It's just if you're out late, taking the train back isn't so easy. You'll end up paying for cabs. I just met a guy from Sweden who had a hotel in Brooklyn because he was out so much that a swank hotel didn't matter to him. You just have to determine what you want to spend your money on. But whatever you decide, do it quickly! Prices skyrocket near the holidays.

And frankly, even supposedly nice hotels like the Hilton near Rockefeller can be dated. And any room can get bed bugs.
