Next week Tropical Depression 12 will strike South Florida, and has a good chance to become a hurricane by then. Even as a tropical storm the winds will be above 50 mph, enough to cause damage. It's projected path according to me is directly over us.
My partner is calling our condo association President at this moment, even though it is 11:30pm and the President usually goes to sleep at 11pm after gay Anderson Cooper's show to decide how soon to put our hurricane committee into action. I told him we're gonna start stockpiling overnight, in case one or both of us choose to ride it out. Either way we have to secure our debit cards, check our car battery and make sure our phone bill doesn't exceed $400.
I think I may want him to travel north to Alaska where he can garage the car and help people up there put up storm shutters, and then be with them when it hits. The winds should be a bit less severe up there, but if it looks really bad they can evacuate further north together to the north pole.
In the meantime I'll try to hold the fort down here. If a window gets smashed out from flying debris I'll do my best to limit the interior damage from wind & rain. This building is in no danger of major destruction at the winds predicted, nor flooding on our level. If post-storm power loss is estimated to be prolonged, like the weeks following Hurricane Wilma in 2005, or our interior is badly damaged, I'll join my partner in Alaska afterwards, or friends (gay of course!) here in gay South Beach if their outdoor emergency generator is operational. Here in hurricane land you've always gotta have these plans in place.
