I am sure you will have a great summer next year. Try to bump this thread in a couple weeks to allow some time for Hurricane Irene clean up and I am sure you will get some more responses.

You can thank Hurricane Irene for making you wait. Parts of the Island are still without power.

I'm from NYC and can tell you that the only really gay area on Long Island is Fire Island. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the gays are there every weekend in Cherry Grove or The Pines. You have to take the ferry over from Sayville. Depending on where on the Island you'll be living, you can either drive to Sayville or take the LIRR to the Sayville stop...then you need a taxi to the ferry landing.

You can be a daytripper or make friends with someone that has a house there or rent one yourself, but you'd have to start looking around February to rent. A weekend (or day) on Fire Island is a great time! You won't be disappointed.

I'm 21 and live on Long Island, and have all my life. I'm not "out" yet (mostly because I'm still sort of figuring myself out, and not sure of my sexuality yet), but Long Island isn't really a bad place for gays at all. You shouldn't have any problems. There's a lot of clubs, bars, restaurants, beaches, gyms/fitness centers, etc everywhere you go.

Although after living here my whole life, I do feel it is time for a change for me personally. I want to move out of state actually, but not because Long Island sucks, just because I personally feel like I need a change of scenery. Life on Long Island is good. Overpriced, but good.

There are some towns that aren't as great as others, but you can PM me if you have any questions.

I grew up on Long Island, still have friends and family there and visit often. You won't have any problem finding other gays on LI.

    I'm from long island.

And it sucks lol. People here in general are real shady yet rich. No real gay scene out here either as far as I know.

On the plus side nyc isn't far. And this is why I am planning to move to queens.

But Li does have great beaches and is a good place to raise a family. As far as fun for someone my age.... It generally is either drive around smoking blunts, getting into trouble, house parties or going to nyc. Or just stuff u can do anywhere like movies, biking ect.

Also its tough meeting people. Most people here have been here for a while and have their established groups. And most people r not friendly.

For example I was at a sublime/311 concert with a fellow realjocker and we were tailgating at Jones beach. We ended up getting drunk and missed sublime lol. So anyway we are walking out after seeing 311 and I overhear some guy saying "how the fuck did we miss sublime" so I go up to him and say yeah we missed sublime too. He stared at me then walked away. I was like wtf, (most) long islanders suck.

Of course I'm here so I make up for most of them being lame ; )

Yeah, Long Island isn't the most friendly place in the world, it can be difficult making friends...especially if you're an adult and not in school. But don't have that mindset of "oh everyone is a dick and I'm never going to have friends" when moving here. Just do it and see how you like it. NYC is just a train ride away.
