So I saw a guy wearing a gas mask while working out today, I tried googling this but the results were inconclusive. Specifically he wore it while bench pressing. The guy was around my age and pretty buff sorta army-ish, so no troll.

    Is he using some stimulant?

I believe the intention is to use it like you were training in high altitude.

The gas mask it designed to seal up against the skin and prevent air from leaking in only allowing it to pass through the filters which makes breathing more difficult.

But erm your suppose to use it during cardio or high intensity exercise..

But that's only a theory that people have.

    I think it's a fetish. icon_lol.gif

But yeah, pretty much what liltanker said. Some endurance atheletes use devices that restrict their air intake to get them acclimated for high altitudes or to "train" their lungs somehow. I honestly don't know the science behind it, but running/tri-athlete shops readily carry these devices.

Sounds kind of kinky and hot. Breath games?

Higher altitude training forces your body to metabolizes oxygen more efficiently, because there is less oxygen at higher altitude plus the lunges have to work harder to absorb more oxygen/release more carbon dioxide and breath more rapidly and fully.

But it's really only useful for advanced to elite athletes not average twats doing bench press.

Alright so I tried to creep a pic but was unable to figure out a way to get a shot from the front without him obviously seeing me. None of the other guys that I talk to at my gym know what the deal is either and were all just a bunch of pussies to go and ask...

Helps build endurance! We used to do gas mask runs before it became against the rules after a few people died from heat related injuries. icon_redface.gif

from a firefighting viewpoint, does it look like a mask from a SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) that fire fighters wear?

maaaaaybe he's acclimating himself to heavy cardio activity while wearing the mask.. just a thought

I just found this topic and posted one about a mask that I saw.

It's called the Altitude Training Mask www.trainingmask.com

I am finding that many MMA fighters are using these types of masks to conditioning and training. they feel they help the body utilize oxygen better

here is a link to a MMA guy doing a workout with one on: http://youtu.be/v91-ESlGlps

I have thought about trying this myself and see what it does but not sure how people at my gym would think about it!

To the OP cturtle I would ask him about what he is training for! I think he would like to share that information!

I'm a firefighter and I believe this would really help me with my job!ave

Have you seen this guy at the gym since then?

Why won't you go ask the guy? Man up and stop being a creeper.

I don't see the big deal in asking him. He must know its obvious and different.

Then I'd ask him how much he charges for a piece of that ass. icon_wink.gif
