I am being recruited for a position in Sydney and was just wondering what people think of living there. I like compact urban areas with walkable neighbourhoods, great public transportation, bike lanes for transport, plenty of parks, ample access to produce and healthy food, safety, a thriving arts and music community, and a friendly vibe. Am not into urban sprawl, car culture, monoculture. So what is Sydney like? And the gay community there?

Been there two years ago for four weeks, so a bit longer than a holiday but not quite as living there, I guess.
You will definitely find very walkable neighbourhoods, lots of parks, great outdoor life, beaches and friendly attitude and an UNBELIEVABLY FIT gay community, so I guess plenty of places where you can get healthy food...and anyway food in Australia is very good.
As far as the cultural aspect is concern, not sure about music but I had the impression that the art scene is not particularly vibrant but I might be wrong.
Also I think in terms of multiculturalism, probably given the geographical location, there are better places out there but nonetheless there are plenty of people from abroad.
Sydney is, in my opinion, one of the best cities I have ever visited, it is STUNNING and the quality of life is VERY high.

I loved Sydney. I lived there for about 6 months and had an amazing time. I lived in Surry Hills, and thought it was a great neighbourhood to consider living in as well.

You will have, quite simply, the best time of your life. Lived there for 1.5 years and loved every minute!

Then I had to come home... icon_sad.gif

Now if you never experienced life in Melbourne, the qulity you truly missed out on; Sydney is so superficial, melbourne is qulity, as well the worlds most livable city; not sure the last time Sydney won that one; but they are so fare down the list, we never get to see them.

Sydney's just a generally great place to live. Do it.
