I'm a new mac user. I was wondering if someone could tell me why every time I turn on my computer, Microsoft office, powerpoint, iTunes and my email automatically open and clutter my screen with all their windows. How do I make that stop??

oh how new? do you have lion or snow leopard?

Open system preferences via the apple logo at the top left then system preferences.

If your using snow leopard check under "users & groups" then under "Login Items"

From there you can turn off startup items.

If it's Lion it's an auto resume feature that I find particularly stupid.

the option is found under "general" then down near the bottom uncheck "Restpore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"

Also, when you close a window, you don't actually quit the program. So if your Mac feels a little slow, make sure you don't have a dozen unnecessary programs open in the background. icon_lol.gif
