In the past couple of years, our country has seen a tremendous swing in regards to the acceptance of minority groups, but research and statistics still show that LGBT youth are going through personal struggles both at school and at home. Some of these struggles consist of bullying, drug abuse, homelessness, isolation and even suicide.

According to PFLAG, approximately 30% of gay and lesbian youth drop out of school due to hardships from physical and verbal abuse. This statistic is caused by the lack of support and intervention for LGBT students by teachers and school administrators. Additionally, the few teachers that would like to intervene often do not have the proper training on how to intervene in anti-LGBT bullying.

Please help me in urging the Obama Administration to appoint a youth advisor who can with the administration on the everyday emotional and complex issues that LGBT youth face.

Why bother? The next administration is just going to fuck everything up we've accomplished...including that, if it were to happen. Have you noticed how anti-gay the 2012 candidates are? They would/do support the bullying.

Plus, the physical and verbal abuse doesn't start at the schools - it starts at home. If the parents are supportive, the children will be armed with the attitude they need to overcome the bullying at school.

If anything is going to be effective, it needs to start by outlawing fundamentalist teachings in churches and homes. For those who say that's not "freedom of religion" - uhh - yes it is. What the fundies are teaching is not religion. It's hate.

Get rid of that and then you'll start to see progress.

Barack wasn't exactly in favor of LGBT rights either. The guy specifically said that he's against gay marriage because of his religious views. He could say any bs he wants at this point about how he's for gay rights to gain LGBT supporters, but he made his position clear when he said that. If people wanted something to get done about this, they should have voted for a guy with balls like Mike Gravel who isn't afraid to state his opinion on issues like this. Instead people vote for the fakest politicians in the world who care more about getting votes than anything else.

Agreed. My mom may struggle a bit with me being gay, but if anyone else says anything about it she will firebomb their life. icon_eek.gif

True that! I was bullied but I am not gonna lobby the govt to fix it. I am being proactive and working with non-profits to stop it!
