I don't believe t.A.T.u. has made any major headlines outside of Russia in quite a few years, but Lena Katina has already finished her first solo album and released her first single and video - "Never Forget You".

I think she makes a nice tribute to the end of t.A.T.u. At least she's had nicer things to say about being part of the group compared to Yulia Volkova.

What happened to that group? I heard rumors that they pretended to be lesbian to gain fame and bring in a large straight male audience. icon_question.gif

Yes, in 2003 they admitted that their lesbian image was a marketing ploy created by their producer, Ivan Shapovalov. It was his idea all along to market an underage 'lesbian couple' and controlled everything they did. He also told them what to say and what not to say to the media. However, they got fed up with his antics and dropped him and the lesbian act. They wanted more freedom in their music.

t.A.T.u. went on an hiatus in 2010 so that both Yulia and Lena could do some solo work. Lena really took it by moving to Los Angeles to record an album and performed shows at a few gay pride events that summer. I guess Yulia got jealous of Lena's progress and said to the press that she disapproved of Lena's sincere interest in a solo career and didn't like that Lena sang old t.A.T.u. songs at her shows.

They decided to end the band officially in March 2011 because they had unresolved issues regarding their solo careers.

    from wikipedia

"He [T.A.T.U.'s producer] made us out to BE lesbians when we were just singing FOR lesbians. We wanted people to understand them and not judge them." - Yulia Volkova

Oh, it's worth noting that Lena recently collaborated with Belanova (she's been doing a lot of promotion in Mexico) for a song called "Tic-Toc", which is in English. That song should be coming out soon.

They sure were exploited. I really liked several of their songs.

Yes, they definitely were. Shapovalov is a pretty fucked up dude when it comes to marketing. However, his intentions did succeed since t.A.T.u. became the most successful Russian act ever. Apparently being scandalous worked since Russian entertainment was quite bland at the turn of the century. Funny thing is, though, Western media made a bigger deal out of the lesbian thing than the Russian media. I think Russians knew all along that their lesbo image was nothing serious. Plus, girls being close and affectionate with each other is not considered unusual in Russia. It's not associated with being gay.

I have to admit that Shapovalov is actually a great music writer and producer. Their music was better when they were with him. He wrote/co-wrote and produced most of the songs I like best from them. But I don't blame them for canning him when they became legal adults. He really took advantage of them. What gets me is how the girls' parents went along with all this from the very beginning.
