Source: The functional nature of conspiracy beliefs: Examining the underpinnings of belief in the Da Vinci Code conspiracy" from Personality and Individual Differences

Focusing on a contemporary conspiracy theory popularized in the novel The Da Vinci Code (Brown, 2002), we examined the underlying psychological factors and individual differences that may predict belief in conspiracy theories, and assessed such beliefs’ resistance to counterevidence. Our results suggest that belief in the Da Vinci Code conspiracy may be associated with coping with existential threat and death-related anxiety. In addition, the extent to which participants believed in the conspiracy was associated with the endorsement of congruent (New Age spiritual) and competing (Christian religious) beliefs, in opposite directions. Finally, exposure to counterevidence resulted in belief reduction, specifically among more religious participants (i.e. among those endorsing a competing belief system). We suggest that belief in modern conspiracy theories may help individuals attain or maintain a sense of meaning, control, and security.

Personally I've never put much stock in conspiracy theories like the Da Vinci Code, Which when you think of it is right down the line of all of the modern Christian church interpretations of Conspiracy theories having to do with end time bible prophecies. These are some of the worst at producing harm to some societies.

Many of those conspiracy theories have to do with Israel and the New Jerusalem to be built on old foundations in the current Jerusalem after the "great battle of Armegedon", hell of it is, such believers in Conspiracy Theories see it as their religious duty to forward the Status Quo Israeli Occupation to take over all of the Palestinian area because "its according to biblical prophecy that the land would be returned to the Jews" The Christian preachers are daily on TV telling their followers that God demands the land be returned to the Jews, the preachers and their followers in turn lobby Christian Congressman who also believe in these theories. These are Usefull Idiots for the far right LIKUD Leaders of Israel such as Netanyahu and Lieberman.

Several modern conspiracy theories have to do with the start of wars, such as the Vietnam war, Then too we have the Conspiracy Theories of Bush/cheney used to promote a war on terror based on the rediculous theory that "The muslims hate our freedoms" and therefore want to destroy us. They then used the terrible events of 911 to say that Iraq was involved so we could go to war with them. Some of the most unbelieveable of their theories have to do with how those buildings came down, Science proves many of their theories on that totally impossible according to known scientific facts.

But I guess the Author Riddler quotes has it right that people want something to believe in for stability, and world powers as well as powerful people use those theories to control people. We should all study and search very diligently before just accepting at face value what we are told in media, by our governments and by supposedly important people. Motives are funny things that always creep up behind everything that happens, there are few pure and simple circumstancial 'accidents'. What a world full of crap to sort through. LOL

An interesting article and plausible conclusions.
The death of Diana,Princess of Wales shocked and saddened many people the world over. How could someone so young and beautiful and full of life die so violently and randomly? It made people feel vulnerable and powerless and insecure - an unpleasant feeling to have.Conspiracy theories that a person or persons unknown had her killed restores order and meaning to life, and comforts people that they will not suddenly be struck down out of the blue and killed, etc. The same could be said for President Kennedy.
There`s also the idea that thanks to the modern media some of these so called 'conspiracy theories' are actually partly (or wholly) true despite governments denying them for many years.Examples include the Australian authorities attempt to 'breed out' the Aboriginal population by repeated marriage(and children) to mixed race individuals.I think the previous Australian goernment publically apologized for this crime against the Aborigines recently. Also, the rumours(strenously denied by all British and post - Independence Kenyan governments) of atrocities against Kenyan civilians by the British Army in revenge for the Mau Mau rebellion`s crimes against white settlers are gradually being revealed as largely true.
As a result many people now see governments as malign, lying conspiracies themselves against their citizens;capable of almost anything and trying to deceive us as well!
In the sense that these theories give comfort and succour to people who feel powerless in a bleak, apparently random, amoral universe, they function like a latter day religous cult.

Because they're real lol it's pretty much what the Government wants you to know or doesn't and the ways they want you to think. ;) You can agree or disagree but it's true. They like to do research on certain things then use it whatever way they can and sometimes it's a good thing, other times its only to their advantage But I am aware. ;'D

Exactly. Conspiracy theories are usually founded and perpetuated by oddballs, who lead very dull lives and are looking for a bit of risk-free excitement (or a fast buck).

I enjoy a good consiracy theory. My reason is simple each one is stupidly funny. The die hardest people are well odd / stupid to say the least. Read any politcal forum and you'll hear the same style of shit. Instead of it being nutty shit { ufo's, two gun men, masonic world order etc}, it nice clean shit so the public eat's It right up because we vote, and make a diffrence yes we do .{republican propaganda Obama no birth cert, democratic prop war monger who eats small kitties with his morning coffee, the airlines are all going under sell your stocks quick before it hits zero} We're a society whose goverment run us on fear. To put it simply there's always three sides to a story side A , side B and the truth.
Altough don't pay attention to any of my wacky, crackpot idea's as I am one those poor stupid oddball's who gets as much entertainment from that crap as I do watching anything else.
