have to go to both towns for work and don't know much about each city..

prefer to walk/tram everywhere so prefer not to be car dependent..

for SF i hear Union Square is the place to be as all transportation goes there, but is it too far to walk to Castro district for entertainment?

Dallas is so foreign to me.. is it even possible to walk/tram in Oak Lawn or will I def need a car? thanks

SF is a bigg-ish city to be walking around. Union square is a healthy 45ish min walk to Castro and part of that is through a not-so-nice neighborhood (Tenderloin). Union Sq is the nicer shopping area with Cartier and Barneys and all that stuff.
I'd recommend going up to Pacific Heights, go to Golden Gate Park; go to the Castro at night for dinner and drinks.

Union Square is a great place to stay, many good hotels. As for he distance from the Castro, there's a Muni station (train) from Union Square to the Castro Street station. The cost is $2. It's easy to get there. Walking in the City is easy, yes there are some areas like the Tenderloin that aren't real nice but walking in other directions will give you plenty of places of interest, ie: Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, SOMA (South of Market) with museums. SOMA also has some gay bars but they tend to be more leather bars.

It's a great place and you'll have a good time. Castro is a definite fun place if you like gay bars, dancing and shopping. Email if you want more info.

Definitely seek eb925guy aka Don opinion on SF. He gave me great info for my trip to SF early this year. Driving and finding parking in SF city was not enjoyable (at least for me) but outside of the city was ok. Enjoy your trip icon_biggrin.gif.
