Boys, I used to do a lot of cardio and now wanna start to bulk up. At the stores I go to, there are tones of protein shakes but I don't know which one is best to buy. So which are the best protein shakes and when should I normally drink em for maximum benefit? I used to be a runner and still run a fair bit. My calves, quads and butt is rock hardicon_biggrin.gif, but I wanna bulk up with the arms and the pecs. So fire off with the advice.

I've tried a lot of different protein mixes and many of them either have questionable ingredients or taste nasty.

MaxMuscle makes a really good powder called MaxPro. The vanilla mixes well and tastes good. We throw it in with a banana, some milk, peanut butter, and ice. Isopure is another good option if you want less of a shake. They have a fruit punch version that is a nice switch-up when mixed with ice and OJ. Tastes like an Orange Julius.

See if you can't score some samples at local stores to get an idea of what you like. Hate to see you forking over cash for a big container of something you'll end up hating. After you figure out what you like, be sure to shop around as prices vary widely. GNCs and gyms will be more expensive than other local nutrition stores. All of the locals will be more expensive than online stores. Bulknutrition.com has been good to me with solid service and fast shipping.

Sorry for the essay. Good luck!

I like the Met-Rx stuff... mixes well and tastes alright. Don't know if its the best out there, possibly not as i've only tried Met-Rx and Body Fortress... Met-rx won hands down out of those two!

Don't really have one to recommend other than I've always used plain ol' EAS MyoPlex.... the chocolate is their best flavor... typically throw it in a nalgene bottle with crushed ice a little milk and some water....

Found crushed ice really helps mix it well if you don't feel like haulin' out the blender.

Roommate uses MuscleMilk - that stuff tastes like candy icon_smile.gif

Not sure if either of these are "good" but that's what I use. Good luck.

There are literally hundreds of protein powder shakes to choose from
But if you wanna gain some mass esp in the upper body
    there is some bad news
you stated that you love running
you're going to have to cut back on your favorite past time
take a look at all the famous runners
what do they have in common.... right, they all have very thin upper bodies
    cut back on the running
as far as protein powder take a look at the weight gainers There's a whole group specifically made for that purpose

I've used the following recently, and found them to be pretty good:

    Optmum Whey

    Dymatize Elite Whey

Weight gainer: Universal Nutrition's Real Gains.

Try ordering from Bodybuilding.com's online store..

Musclemilk all the way... only downside is that it starts out tasting really good but after a few times of drinking it, sometimes you fell lke you are going to vomit putting it down. But all and all results are good and the taste is prob the best on the market.

    1. As you can see everyone has an opinion and noone totally agrees.

    2. You should read labels and look for what you think will be the best for your body chemistry. For example if you are allergic/lactose intolerant to all things dairy...Casein, while excellent - especially for a pre-sleep shake, will not be good for you. Do your research, read some labels, and find out what is junk and what isn't.

    3. As for brands, I to look for, I used to be a strictly Muscle Milk guy....but after i put it in my plastic bottle, stirred, and still had chocolatey chunks that looked like "chocolate squirts", I had it and made the switch to ISOPURE which disolves fantastically into water (my preferred method of protein delivery). Don't get me wrong, MM gave me good gains but Isopure is helping with lean muscle and in general tastes better to me. On the flip, its also more expensive.

    4. Test many different varieties and see which one YOU like. Only you know what will work the best for you. So try them out.

    5. Check out JNModesto's post - he had some good stuff about the different types of protein.

    Thats all and good luck.

PS - GQJock - what you have stated is not entirely true. Look at Olympic Track and Field Stars (sprinters) artb.jpg vs Olympic Long Distance Runners worlds117.jpg. Completely different body make up - you can totally build mass and be a strong runner - but you need to do it in short explosive bursts and not for long distances. It's in those bursts that some how you gain muscle mass. Do not ask me how.

    Broad Brush.

This is a SELECT few and while there are countless others who most definately Juice, use HGH, etc. there are millions of others that do not. Why? Because they are TRUE athletes and do not need the extra boost to "win".

I am Not going to start a fight about this over the internet...because it is just like winning the "Special Olympics".

I'll leave it to you to find out why.

I think most people wouold accept that sprinters are muscular and middle to long distance runners are thinner. The argument on this here seems to be at least 3-1 icon_smile.gif
To the OP, HIIT is fine if you want to still keep running, but there is some evidence that running long distances is detrimental to putting on muscle mass.

I recommend that you check out Optimum Nutrition's Pro Complex, it has a great amino acid profile, it tastes great, dissolves well, and has a mix of both fast and slow digesting protein that creates a sort of time release action of continuous protein release.
