Okay, so I'm almost 19. And still don't have my license. Because I had to do it all by myself, and had no support from anyone else apart from my sister who said I had to learn manual. She took me for like 5 drives then quit. However, I could not pick it up! And my boyfriend who is know taking me says he only learnt in an auto, had two manual driving lessons and that was it. I'm up to about 25 hours now... And last night I couldn't change the gears properly, after almost chucking it into reverse I almost crashed into a pole just out of confusion and frustration. The thing is I have no problem in an auto! Haven't had one yet! But soon as I jump in a manual it's like all my road skills just turn to concentrating on gears and I fuck up constantly! Arghh! Anyone else had this problem? I seriously just want my auto license, but everything comes back to driving manual as i'm with a driving school now, but all the kids have taken auto so I'm stuck with manual. And I'm seriously afraid of crashing, which I have almost done 4 times now in a manual. I went over a round about and nearly crashed into another car at like 10 hours. So I'm thinking of quitting and not worrying about getting my license til I get an auto car and can drive in that,

learn where each gear is without looking down.

Just sit there going from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th to 5th and then going back down again, keep your foot on the clutch car doesn't need to be running and just keep practicing until you got the gear order right.

Then go out on the road.

I know where all the gears are, I just get worked up and confused and forget... And I know where to put them, but when I do I always feel like it's wrong...

Once you know where the gears go they wont feel wrong.

    It's just time and experience.

It just takes time. When I bought my first sports car, I didn't know how to drive a stick. I had to have a friend pick it up from the dealership. Learning a manual gearbox is simply a matter of practice, and lots of it. Taking a few classes at a driving school is not enough time.

Go to a big empty car park & practice driving whilst changing gears until you get used to them.
Also practice pulling away without using the accelerator - just balancing it on the clutch.
Once you get used to them you'll (hopefully) stop panicking on the road.
