I just moved here about a week ago, I went to club cafe' once and it was ok.

But on Saturdays the House of Blues over by Fenway Park has a gay night every Saturday I believe, and that's a lot of fun and has a really big crowd, although rather expensive.

Um... the labs are pretty active late at night (that's where I've been most of my time here : ). Libraries too.
As for partying, Boston doesn't have a very strong night life--very few venues are even open past 11pm honestly. (Boston is more of a big town than a city.)
Can you narrow down what you're interested in?

GQB (Guerilla Queer Bar) is perhaps the most popular gay nightlife event in the city. I haven't been very impressed the couple of times I've gone; still it's relatively popular.

(If you're not familiar with the concept, I'm not sure how common it is, the idea is that a different nominally non-gay venue is chosen to be taken over each time. So, turning, say, a 'straight' frat-ish bar into a gay bar for a night.
It's a really cool idea (and it's symbol is Chere Guevara, which is really cute), but there's suspicions that whomever organizes it is getting kickbacks by the venues being "taken over" (since GQB brings a lot of bussiness) resulting in lame choices and watering down the theme. e.g. one "take over" recently was a rented room at a hotel ...how does that make sense? GQB even supplies it's own DJ sometimes (perhaps frequently?). Besides indicating less illicitness than suggested by the name the DJ also just sucks IMO; just really boring, cliched, and artless selections of dance music. I couldn't get into it; though I'm sure I'll go again sometime just to meet friends or friends of friends.)

From my days as a grad student there, that's what I remember, along with a very spartan gym on campus.

I just moved here 2 1/2 weeks ago....

I've visited a few of the places that they have but not all of them...

    Machine was pretty fun....

Paradise was pretty tragic... gay porn on the TV screens, which is comical, but added to the strange crowd and bizarre dancers... I was like wow, I need more to drink. LOL

Club Cafe wasn't bad- It's kind of small but it was pretty fun. The video bar is always a fun concept, fun top 40 music.

I went to another event called Hot Mess Sundays for Labor day weekend... which was fun. I dont recall if its recurring or if its just for long weekends. The actual venue is called Underbar. Was pretty big... had a good time.

I still have not been to a few other places.... there's a place called House of Blues and some other place that I can't remember!! l

All the current university gym's that I'm familiar with are awesome. (I'm really spoiled actually.)

What places are closing at 11pm? Some clubs that have special events will close early but 99% of the bars I've been to go to 2.

Times have changed or I went to the wrong school - wasn't known exactly as a jock school.

I don't have much to add except that Paradise can seem tragic, but it's fun with a group. I don't go often, maybe once every few months, but usually have fun. You just need to go in knowing it's not the fanciest place. icon_smile.gif

TT the Bear's on Saturday nights has an event called Heroes that has great music. It attracts a diverse crowd of goth, punk, gays, and others. Music is mostly New Wave. I don't like clubs, but I like that night. Great people watching!

Club Cafe isn't my favorite, but lots of young guys go there. My friends and I tend to go to smaller bars like Sister Sorel or Fritz. Most of the time I don't go to gay bars, but just regular places. It's pretty mixed here. Anything in Somerville or Cambridge is bound to be mixed. Startlite is my favorite place over here.

It depends what your looking for. I like club cafe to just hang with friends if you want to dance go to paradise...and yes its kind of trashy but it is what it is. If you feel like just watching a game, go fritz. Bears go to the alley.

There's "Randolph Country Club" which is outside of the city a bit.. It's not actually a country club, but apparently has a pretty good crowd. Never been myself but have heard some good reviews.

Otherwise, Boston is a BAR city, that's why the nightlife isn't so great. People tend to go out to Bars and Pubs which often will have a dance floor or a DJ in a separate area. Ned Divines in Faneuil Hall has some good nights, then there's a couple of other fun spots around... Mostly 'straight' bars though.

As has been said: Machine, Estate I think has a gay night, House of Blues, Club Cafe... not many to chose from, but the upside of that is that it means most people go out to the same place, so good crowds etc...

    What about Cambridge?

I don't know about Cambridge specifically, but here are some of the places I've visited this summer.

Machine: Overall not bad of place. Great size bar, decent size dance floor, not bad of an atmosphere. I went here when it was 18+ night. It was very crowded and lines to get in were pretty long. Would definitely try this place out again, just when it is 21+ only, maybe.

Paradise: Like ZbmwM5 said, its a bit sketchy, and somewhat trashy, gay porn on tv screens and go-go dancers. My friend likes this place and always wants to go back, but I am not very fond of this place, especially porn. Other than that, drinks are good, and decent space on dance floor.

Estate (I think): I really liked this place. They have a decent floor plan, with 2 levels, and more of an "upscale" feel. Bottom level has the dance floor and the general bar area, while 2nd level has great lounge area with comfortable seating. On the 2nd level you can just relax and hang out or observe people on the dance floor. I would definitely want to come back to this place and check it out again.

Club Cafe: This place is interesting as well. The bar+sitting area is separated from the dance floor. They have limited floor space so this place gets crowded pretty fast. I remember everyone kind of bumping into me all the time so have to be careful especially if you have a drink in your hand.

Rumor: This is actually a straight bar/club that has 1 night for gay life/scene. It is a very decent place, has a great dance floor and lounge area. Definitely worth checking out, just have to figure out which day is gay night, I can't remember.

So yeah, even though I've lived in Mass for past 11yrs I haven't actually explored Boston area all that much and only recently started exploring the gay scene here. Most of these places I listed, I only visited once and some possibly twice. I haven't gone to bars yet and I am sure they provide unique experience of their own.

    Anyways, hope that helps.

All I can say is Fritz's when I am in town and want to take in a game. It is a sports bar, not really much else.

It depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a night of drinking and dancing, go to Epic at the House of Blues (Saturday nights). For a laid-back night, I definitely recommend 28 Degrees - not a gay bar per se, but frequented by a lot of gay men due to its location. Club Cafe is fine, but I find the crowd there to be tragically cookie-cutter.
