Made me think of Benjamin Franklin's thought "Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one."

I've worked for a major mall managing company before and this is common practice for ages, they mainly do it for stats, unique visitors, shopper pattern etc every door has a counter for every customer that enters through malls doors or pass by their main cameras. think of it the physical version of a website counter stats or youtube insight.

they're mostly used to know what areas tend to be busy, full, needs improvement etc

why don't they just make an app that remembers you're parking space number?

That's just a very poorly designed application. Whoever wrote it was either a newbie, or a complete idiot. I see that a lot in the industry.
