I have a question for the NYer RJ's. Where's a good, inexpensive gym in the city?

I'm looking to join a gym soon because I'm getting sick and tired of people saying I'm too skinny. I could workout in my house but I don't have the proper equipment and I'd rather be in a more social environment- it's no secret that a lot of young single people go to gyms looking for potential dates.

I've heard Planet Fitness is good but I don't know much about the other big ones here.

Avoid planet fitness like the plague. We just had a discussion about them somewhere on here. Otherwise I can't really help you personally. I haven't even been to the big apple, let alone know the gyms around there. All I know is that Planet Fitness is a complete joke. Sorry, but good luck to you none of the less.

I second avoiding planet fitness. How can a gym not have barbels for squat and deadlifts.... It's way to casual of a gym. I love my gym but I work out on long island so cant heelp u. Fortunately most gyms offer a free day trial to check it out.

    Where in town are you?

The Crunch at Lafayette & Broadway was my favorite.

Some of the other Crunch locations are quite good also.

There is a great gym, very manly and hardcore, called MidCity Gym that I love. And there are all levels of guys there.. you do not have to be highly trained to go.

I love Midcity Gym. When I am in Manhattan I like to train at David Barton on Astor, but it is hard to get a pass.

I use New York Sports Clubs, lots of locations, decent facilities, but at around $86/month, not cheap.

A friend of mine has good things to say about Boom http://www.boomfitness.com/join2.html. Not pricey at all and good hours, though it looks like just two locations.

I use NYSC too because it's ubiquitous, and that'll be helpful when it's cold outside when I travel anywhere around town.
