Has anyone ever seen old photos of gay couples before?

I came across an interesting post on a blog featuring old photos of gay couples and thought it was an interesting for some here. Even though I'd like to believe that all of them are couples but a few might be brothers.

Still nice to think they're all couples though.

Thanks for the link Hypnotico. Still need to learn how to make clickable links on RJ.

I love the second pic I posted of the couple from the 1920's(?) Such a great photo. There's other good photos too but I won't post them all.

Just an advisory. While I've visited sites like these before, and no doubt many of these couples are gay, it's a mistake to believe they all are.

There was a time, many decades ago, when "male bonding" meant you could embrace your buddy or your brother for a photo. And both still be straight. You see a lot of that from pics during war, when emotions were heightened, and men relied upon other men for their very lives. That is not being gay.

So that today, when these photos surface, we interpret them in our modern terms. I think that's a mistake. Some of these guys were undoubtedly gay lovers, but not all. There was a kind of camaraderie among men that we don't understand today, that is long past, but I'm just old enough to remember a little of it.

Don't assume that every pic of men embracing from 60 to over 100 years ago is a gay image. It was a different world, when the political agenda of today's right-wingers hadn't yet taken hold.

    Nice pics!

Here's a song from 1922 that fits some of these pics rather well, and I've added the lyrics available. There's a lot of conjecture about what this song is about, though it seems pretty obvious.

Life is a book that we study
Some of its leaves bring a sigh
There it was written, my buddy
That we must part, you and I

Nights are long since you went away
I think about you all through the day
    My buddy, my buddy
    Nobody quite so true

Miss your voice, the touch of your hand
Just long to know that you understand
    My buddy, my buddy
    Your buddy misses you

Miss your voice, the touch of your hand
Just long to know that you understand
    My buddy, my buddy
    Your buddy misses you

Your buddy misses you, yes I do...

So true. Organizations like the Catholic Church and social conservatives made affection a dirty thing. And then we had commies hiding everywhere in plain sight...and if you hugged one, you were suspect.

Non sexual touch and affection is something even animals know is healthy for them. Just look at the way dogs and cats play with and lick each other. It's a shame that so many Americans probably go months or even years without being affectionately touched.

I bet the people in these photos would be more offended by seeing affection being dirtied, than any assumptions about their sexual orientation.

So true. Back then you could hold your friends hand as democrats were lynching blacks without a second look. icon_rolleyes.gif

sometimes you just go off the deep end.

I thought they would get in big trouble- they have family photos and stuff.

I dont know how that played out. Art had a point up to the end about the context of the pics. I have seen some WW2 pics of dudes "bonding" when looked at today looks like foreplay. So who knows what was really going on.

Please, make that Southern Democrats, following the abuses of Radical Republican Reconstruction after the US Civil War. Black lynchings are a black mark on this country.

A time when there was a "solid South" in Congress against the North, if you know your US history. And today that has flip-flopped.

Now it's Republican Christian fundamentalists in the South, but the same people, the same goals. Bigotry, prejudice, the same themes that have ruled the US South for over 150 years, following the Civil War, and long before.

All of which has nothing to do with pictures taken a 100 years ago. You just used as an excuse to say something vile and unsubstantiated. For as much as you vilify some of the people not as far left as you, you are just as bad and feel comfortable doing it because you are among "friendlies" Think before you post. Sometimes you just come off as uninformed, bitter and mean. You took an innocent thread about pictures and made it political for no reason other than to stir shit up to entertain yourself. I would hate to think you are that retarded in real life.

Actually it has everything to do with pics taken something like 100 years ago. That's my very point. That these guys were living in a different world than we are today. And that being buddies, camaraderie, was more accepted than it is today. And it wasn't always gay.

You & I need to e-mail. I think we aren't all that far apart. I'd rather have you as a friend than an enemy. You are smart, and I value people who are smart. Let us reason together, if you will allow. icon_biggrin.gif

Actually Dallas.. I have to admit, it was YOU this time.. I followed the thread and Art's post was informative and correct. However, it was YOUR "bitterness" that flung this into the 'political and ideological' tit foe tat it now has become.

Romantic affection, I personally feel, shouldn't be equated with dirtied.

    Here's a little bit about long-ago homophobia...
