Boycotting another RJ's posts

There seems to be a handful of RJ members - JackNWNJ comes to mind - who sometimes begins outlandish topics or comments on forum topics with contrarian viewpoints. Do you see a value in seeing such positions aired or do you view it purely for its entertainment value?

Long before any computer programmer came up with an "IGNORE" button, people of all races, faiths and walks of life had the ability to simply not listen to or not read something that bothered them or was unpleasant.

I do believe that the human race has lost that ability....

I read and make my own decisions without the need to publicly berate another person.

I don't use the ignore feature, but I do ignore people who have shown that they can't have a reasonable conversation.

I don't mind people posting opinions that are contrary to mine, but when they resort to petty attacks it's pretty obvious that they can't substantiate their opinions and are simply looking to troll.

I think some of the other RJ members just like having some sport with these guys to expose them for who they are.

People need to do what feels right to them.

I had a subscription to DumbAss Times.

For awhile I opened it up and spent a few minutes scanning it for anything of value. EVERY article seemed mean-spirited.....but I gave it a chance to provoke my thoughts on whatever topic it attempted to cover.

What a waste! Just nasty rants with no arguments presented.

I cancelled my subscription to DumbAss Times for the same reason I chose to stop viewing posts by JackNWNJ. Both are a waste of my time.

On RJ there are hundreds and HUNDREDS of guys who have some POVs and good arguments to offer. I want to conserve my time for some of them.

A problem with blocking on this site is that you still see their comments when someone who's unblocked quotes them. And then I get curious, about what the Hell is being said.

At present I don't think I have anyone's posts blocked. Though I do have quite a number blocked from sending me e-mails. The last thing I need is bitchy queens e-mailing me about how much they hate me.

Yah know, I don't do that myself to others here, sending little hate mails when I get my panties in a twist. No matter how much they try to irritate me in the forums, stooping to their level is an admission of defeat.

And in the Army I was taught not to engage in battles I can't win, and trying to win-over certain members here is a losing proposition. You might post to correct their mistatements & canned political propaganda for the benefit of others, but never expect to convert the poster himself.

My 'ignore' function has no rust on it.

If a couple of guys hijack a thread with bonding and flirting like middle school classmates, two clicks clears it right up.

Also works for carpet bombers...those super-caffeinated posters who overexpose themselves to the point of saturation. I don't want to feel like a guest on your talk show so i-g-n-o-r-e and buh bye.

I use the ignore button regularly. In theory I like the idea of "if you don't like it don't read it," but on a site like this (or FB) that I visit frequently by the time I see something I've already read enough of it to piss me off. I view the decision to block those who post annoying crap as equivalent to the decision not to watch the Jersey Shore or not to subscribe to a Rupert Murdoch tabloid.

I agree for the most part, although occassionally it can become similar to trying to watch a show and being bombarded with commercials that are particularly nasty every 8 seconds, depending on the content of the posts.

I don't think I've blocked anyone. You'll just see their posts if someone quotes them anyways. I just don't read certain user's posts. Like the guy that posts like

    whenever there's a good
    day i just feel like
i want to go out and
scream off the top of my
    lungs because
    i don't think there might be a
    second chance , ya
    know , what i mean?

It's an eyesore. Not at what is being said... but I just don't like the format. So if I see a person posting like that then my eyes just wander somewhere else immediately.

    Everyone's bitchy today.

It's a forum guys!! It's a place where everyone can get to exercise their right to free speech, no matter how stupid or brilliant their posts are.

Read it and converse. Otherwise move on.

    How complicated is that?

Thanks for your comments. Does this fall into the category of 'Choose your battles carefully'? I am still trying to learn this...lol

The meanest posters are not around for a few days and the rest start cannibalizing each other.

I don't use the ignore button and crey said what I want to say so much better
