Decline?

How many people feel that this site has begun to decline exponentially in recent times?

The chat room, once a place where people actually chatted, has become the standard scrolling request for camera based shenanigans and hook-ups, and the forums, with few exceptions, seem to rapidly descend into sniping between various factions.

I suppose it is an inevitability of any site that does not vet its members, but I find it a little depressing that this site is rapidly losing the higher ground it once held.

I'm sure nothing can be done, but I thought I'd voice my concern.

I think so long as good, longstanding posters remain in the forums (ahem...), the site will be just fine. If the people whose contributions have been exemplary of what we want on RealJock simply go silent and abandon the forums to the...er...uninitiated and unwashed....then what incentive remains for others to stay and maintain standards? Any site/community is a reflection of its membership. If the membership that allowed RealJock to be known for holding a "higher ground" go meekly into the night, their influence likewise vanishes, or at the very least is diminished. Communities are active, dynamic things, and they attract new members based on the perception of what they currently are.

Dammit, Colm, now somebody's gonna go rail against us as being elitist and inflexible to change (something which, for the record, we're capable of, Mr. _of_Dublin, nee colmdublin).

I hope it isn't. I just found this place. I mean is there any other place to even go on the internet for gay guys who don't want to be trashy?

I've been talking to some sexy, athletic, black SGL brothas I hang with on another site ,trying to get them to come on here. They are educated and extremely outspoken with views ranging from conservative to militant. You have been warned!

yeah Colm -- RJ is kinda over.
it's been tru for a while. the site design lacks sophistication and style (compare to FaceBook) and the regulars post too often, others, not enough. it's still fun for me because i have BF and this is a non-sexual site. yeah, mostly.icon_twisted.gif
still -- it's over. sorry RJ.

Things like this happen in waves. It's true that we have lost some truly great and inspiring people here on RJ, but there are new people signing up all the time. These new people will contribute new ideas (and perhaps rehash some stuff we've already discussed), but these are just the pains of evolution. I think that the staff at RJ continually strives to improve it and is very passionate about this site. I have faith that they won't let it slide.
    Keep hope alive, Colm.

Like anything else, it ebbs and flows. I've only been on here since January, so I don't know what it's been like in the past. I went in chat once and it was pretty much a waste of time. The conversation consisted of 'take your shirt off', 'so and so looks so good without a shirt'...you get the idea.

It's pretty much a given that as the regular active posters grow in numbers, more friendships are going to develop and make the forums more 'social oriented' and less 'serious discussions only oriented'.

I have been around from the early days of this site, I have to agree the forums have gotten a bit high schoolish is some regards, but I think this site, like anything else is ever changing and will eventually swing back in the right direction.

I'll admit that I haven't been online as much as I was during the winter, and that the site hasn't been the same without me.

I think things have become less consistently entertaining and more baiting ever since the creators of the site created the facility for people to embed pictures and utube clips into the Forums. It seems to have gone downhill from that point. I'm not a fan of the Lolcats for instance.

I don't know how this site WAS, so I can't judge. But the solution seems simple! Nab art_smass and tie him up in the homepage!

    With websites...
there's always a decline when they get more and more people who get away from their core constituency group

as RJ been growing there's been a steady upsurge in guys who aren't jockish in any sense of the word
guys who don't have any pictures of themselves and don't have any info on their profiles
basically guys looking for a cheap thrill icon_confused.gif

No offence to the guys you talk about. I don't know them, but I would use the word "educated" with caution. I have seen on many occasions, here on RJ also, that so called "educated" depending on what your definition of "educated" is icon_question.gif are not that smart. In some instances you would have a more intelligent discussion with a 2 year old.

This is the sort of thing that I'm talking about. Some people are stupid? Mike, how is this constructive? You're being agressive to a group you haven't even encountered, and it's completely off topic.

Colm, this is just one of my pet peeves. I really don't mean to be aggressive to any group. But I don't see why "educated" needs to be used. While there are lots of people that further their education in collage, it in my opinion does not mean they are any smarter that those that didn't.

All I'm saying is "educated", in the words of Sir Alan Sugar "means jack shit to me"

How you respect others is much more important. If there is anything wrong with the forums it is the lack of respect. You wont learn respect in collage.

While most of you collage boys are smart and cool. It was not collage that made you that way. You were good guys before collage.

That is my point Colm, and I hope it does not offend anyone.

BTW, Colm, you should post to the forums more. That would help icon_wink.gif

Its been interesting watching this site change over the six months or so I've been here. The overall feel and vibe of this site has definitely changed...
I think that its really a forum issue though... I have consistently met very engaging, smart, and wonderful people on this site since the first day that I logged on. the forums, however, have become very judgmental and a little bitchy.

I do not agree that RJ is over though! Damn, this site is still the best that I have ever found to meet sane (well a very small percentage of you guys are really sane..) gay folks that are not online only for the possible hookup op or webcam play (Ok fine, maybe only a small percentage of you arn't on there for that either...)

bah the site will be fine. many good people are still here in the forums. unless a thread gets entirely derailed it's not the end of the world. as the site's membership grows so will the challenges. but the group many of us have gotten so used to reading from wil continue to be a smaller percentage of the posts, and so it feels a little alien. but, new members, new view points, new topics. and new "coming out" threads icon_smile.gif

the chat on the other hand... well the public chat is basically getting overcrowded with new members who think RJ is like any other hookup site, and then don't listen to people when people tell them it's not. i think a spam guard in there could help, one that picks up on repetitive posts.. Also, it depends what time you log in. different folks with different chat goals at different times. night chat is exactly like the forums. a group of regulars shootin the shit with each other in a cross-country flirty nature. it happens in the forums too.

I don't see much difference in the forums. I don't do the chat room at all, it reminds me of Gay.com and I wanted something different. I think Realjock is fine and their features continue to improve.

O M G...YES! It feels like a completely different world out there. Hence I also keep my IM off. But in fairness, gay.com was cool back in 1999.
