I have been perusing the cardio classes offered at 24 hour fitness to flip up the cardio and keep it interesting. And then I ran across the article in Details:

How to Get the Body of the Moment
The new masculine ideal is trim but not thin, muscular but not top-heavy. To achieve this physique, many guys are adopting an unlikely approach: women's workouts.

    http://www.details.com/style-advice/grooming-and-health/201011/how-to-masculine-muscular-ideal-body-physique-workout-routines

Has anybody tried Zumba, Cardio Dance Party, or a Hip-Hop dance class at their gym? Did you like it or feel that it was a waste of time?

I do Zumba to encourage my best friend to lose weight. She doesn't like to go without me. It's a ton of fun, but I've never really done it for weightloss as I'm trying to build muscle at the moment. As a result, I typically just eat a bit more afterwards to make up for the calorie burn :p

    It's fun though!

can i be honest? oh god...embarassing....a couple friends and I get together 2 -3 nights a week and visit, have a healthy dinner, and then sweat our asses off to Just Dance and Just Dance 2.....yes...I know...Im 32...and Just Dance is kinda juvenile...but you know what, its a hell of a lot cheaper than paying for a dance class that I would be the only guy in anyway....and that damn Wii game has shown major results on all of us.

so dance, in your living room, for free...draw the blinds, if you must icon_smile.gif

Do what's fun. Sometimes, I'll just put on my headphones and jump rope while watching the game. Other times, I'll just dance around the house in my boxers in the dark. Cardio is totally mind over matter. If you're enjoying what you do or can find a way to zone out, you can have incredible workouts without even realizing how long you've been at it.

Eh. I feel the dance classes at the gym are a waste for the most part. From my experience, you have a lot of out of shape people that brings the pace and intensity of the class down to the point where I don't even break a sweat. Plus, they've always felt cheesy compared to their actual dance predecessors: real hip hop, real latin dancing, and real ballet (for pilates).

I think they work if you're just trying to get some activity in without thinking too hard about it. But it's less efficient than a traditional cardio workout, or an actual dance class due to it being dumbed down in a sense.

That being said, ballet is a great cardio workout (especially when you're doing jumps and turns). Breakdancing is a great cardio workout and it can incorporate strength training at the same time (using bodyweight). Both dances work the core muscles and leg muscles quite a bit. Ballroom and Latin dancing is usually a bit less intensive until you get to the more advanced levels, but a social salsa dancing could get pretty intense too.

ETA: Pole dancing was the most intense dance experience I've ever had. My forearms were sore for days icon_smile.gif

I love spinning and kickboxing...those are my favorite cardio classes at the gym. I'd give those a shot.

^This is cool. It is such a bonding experience.

I took a spinning class last Tuesday. It was fun. Kickboxing looks like it will be fun, too.

    Thanks for the responses. icon_biggrin.gif

There's a new one that totally rocks - a variation of Zumba, called ZOMBO:

Most 24 hr's also have the TKB Turbo Kick boxing classes.
It's not as "stupid looking"(if you dont have the hips to move). But it does take a bit of coordination. I took the class thinking i looked stupid but most the folks in there looked just as "dumb" as i did. After about 3 classes you'll get the hang of it. Its a great Cardio workout. Spin is great on as well.

Just remember you're there for you, who gives a flyin' flip what you look like and its fun laughing at yourself the first few times.

That said, I dont have the balls to take Zumba just yet. maybe in the near future.

I did it with two other friends of mine. I was the only guy in the class... I think I spent more time laughing than I did moving. I nearly peed myself when the instructor yelled "come on" when it came to shaking your ass and tah-tahs. I'm like, "Uh, I've got pecs... not boobs. They don't shake." (Then again my moobs probably do shake)

Thanks for the advice. I am going to check the classes out.

I'm a Zumba-holic here from when I first started in 2008. It's a lot of fun I have to say and it's energetic based on the instructor you get. I know I am doing the training class on Thursday here and I can't wait to be an instructor. I see my mom doing it and she has been drawing in people. I know that I can do the same since I'm young, a guy, and can shake my ass very nicely. So you can have fun. Just look at the classes and see how the instructors are. Recall that not all instructors are going to be the same. Each does the music differently and as such you will see how each instructor is different. I hope that helps out a bit.

I've only been to 2 Zumba classes, but it was so much fun. I definitely was not expecting to sweat that much. PLUS, you learn some pretty sweeet dance moves you can pull out in the club.
