I know there are RJ gatherings in certain cities but has anyone proposed this: A first ever International RealJock Gathering in 2012. I propose Vancouver, BC and will help set it up ( was on the host committee for the Democrats Abroad convention when they met here in 2008...). Interested? And what would you like the gathering to be about?

Ah, grasshopper, I have some ideas - could coincide with the sex fetish convention they have every year...or during Vancouver's Pride the last week of July/first week of August...or a fall gathering where the airfare and hotel rooms are cheaper for out-of-town RJ members.

We could have various meet-and-greet events. RJ nights at the local clubs/bars/bathhouses for those so inclined. Sightseeing with some our the local hot guys. Have a charitable event to show we are not all shallow (ya, right...lol).

Maybe a 'Diversity Night' some place about the wide range of guys and couples in the RJ world...set a world's record for the largest dance where all guys have to be shirtless...'gay' comes in all ages, shapes and sizes where on one day we walk collectively around the Seawall and Stanley Park... and of course meet the guys you've met on RJ.

Opportunity for guys who have never been to Vancouver or haven't been here in a while to visit. I think guys around the world would like to "connect...for a day, a weekend or a lifetime". Maybe that could be our theme.

    Your thoughts?

Nope not a fan of Vancouver.. too far away.. too expensive, totally not central if you want something international.. not to mention I was there when the idea for a Vancouver meet up was supposed to be held and that never happened

The only central location for international meetups would be in the US...

OTOH, I dont know too many people from Latin America besides myself who would be attending on here.... not to mention nobody from Europe could make it either... an "international" meet up would wind up being just Canada and US in the end.. which is not that international really....

I would say the best place is just plain old NYC, for anything international... either way, I dont think international would really work

Might be better to have meetups that coincide with international gay sporting events, like the Gay Games or the Bingham Cup. Presumably, there would be a bunch of us going anyway, either to compete or watch or both, so nobody would have to make a special (and potentially expensive) trip.

LOL The only internationally-friendly destination is the US? I used to help plan the Board meetings for a multinational company (offices in 16 countries, every inhabited continent) where members flew in from 18 different countries. We found that as far as visas as well as flight routes went, London, Paris, and Singapore were actually easier than American cities.

Obviously this is not the same demographic, but yankinbc was just trying to get the conversation started and graciously offering to take on a considerable chunk of the work. Realistically, would there be more non-Europeans going to a meet-up in Europe, or more non-North Americans going to a meet-up in North America? (Just as an example: not to slight those who live elsewhere). And I assume by the fact he says "first ever" that the idea would be to have subsequent ones in other countries. Not all of us enjoy international travel, and not all of us have the resources to do so.

Thank you for your support. Yes, just trying to get the ball rolling...

    Find a few things interesting in the few postings so far: 1 - It HAS to be in the U.S. Really? Americans - and I am one of them living in Canada - need to stop thinking its only their world; 2 - NYC? I love that city. But if you want to talk about expensive...; 3 - Democrats Abroad convention of '08 had people come from all over the globe: Europe, South America, Asia and yes, even the USA;
4 - Find it interesting that gays with disposable income find the time and money to go to White Parties (does anyone do that any more? ...It's so 80's...lol), Palm Springs, cruises, etc. but would whine about coming to Vancouver. There is a name for this: provincialism.

There was already a Toronto meet up. The NY meetups (3 in the last four months) have been successful due to practical feasibility and a core group of NY'ers that serve as a base for it. In theory any city would be a good enough location for an RJ meetup, you just need a restaurant and or bar. Everything gets lost in translation when you get down to agreeing where you're going, what you're doing, and who's going. Look at the attempts for the California meet up, they've all been disastrous. Cali is too large and decentralized even if there are TONS of Cali RJers.

Thanks for the input and valued comments. We are not talking about 10,000 members here. Those who can come, come. Also like idea of Toronto or Montreal in the Fall. Would love to meet guys in those cities, connect with them, etc.

11337S saidhopefully, it works out for ya, man..
i tried this a few years ago...
might've been 1 year ago, actually, idk...

even got someone to work on flights
was able to work on even getting some sweet deals

no one was able to come through, though...
    and the economy icon_rolleyes.gif

so i just ended up taking a trip by myself, lol! :p

I want to talk to you and get your valuable input...have organized political conventions, church gatherings, socials, etc. in the States and now Canada. It doesn't have to be grueling, guys. Collectively we could make it happen AND have fun at the same time...

Actually Montreal in October is a great idea... The second weekend in October it's already a gay-party city for Black & Blue. This falls on a 3-day weekend for both Canada (Thanksgiving) and USA (Columbus Day). And Montreal is still a good city for flights but not as expensive as Vancouver or New York.

This reminds me of the old Harry S Truman line: If the only vote I'd get is mine I'd be happy (or something close to that...).

Just off top of my head: having it in the fall would be the most affordable AND nicest time to visit. Do a survey of two things: what could guys afford and what would they like to do once here? Put a cap on the number who could come with a deeply discounted registration fee for early registration.

I just would like to meet a lot of you wonderful guys out there - no, I'm not lonely, am happily married and have plenty other projects up the ying-yang - including those I may be always agree with here on the forums.

Isn't anyone interested in just meeting other guys with NSA in a fun atmosphere and maybe walk away with good memories and new friendships?...

gotcha, ok: proving that old saying, "If at first you don't succeed, then obviously it wasn't ever going to work out so please stop trying."

LOL I for one would love another excuse to visit Vancouver. I haven't been out there since 1997 and owe a cousin a visit besides.

Montreal, same. For it only being 5hrs away by train (1 hr flight), the fact that I haven't been since 2007 is pitiful.

As a journalist for an online GLBT magazine - versmagazine.com - I tried to just get the results for the North American Out games held in Vancouver this summer: couldn't find them on the Internet. Also, some criticism about the games - poor publicity, same old cast of characters from gay community, etc. etc. But I see your point...
