We the species that becomes more prosperous when we become more populous?

I would have to say I think there's a fundamental mistake in thinking here: the species has become more populous because it has become more prosperous... (greater food production -> greater reproduction)

No... what you'd find is that wealthier societies initially see increases in reproductive growth and then they slow down. It ultimately becomes more expensive to have kids than it does not to (ie previously they were a cheaper form of labor). That's why we are starting to see negative population growth in the developed world.
