I have not been motivated to hit the box office lately, but have grown a bit nostalgic I suppose for films I knew when growing up, and have revisited a few recently that have made me pine for the days when a good picture was not entirely over-run by special effects, or Tom Cruise.

Here is a short list of Classics - for the doldrums of Summer

SUPERMAN - Christopher Reeves is the ONLY superman in my book. It is a bit heart breaking that they have tried to remake this film. Margot kidder kicks what's her names ass in the Lois Lane dept, and sorry Kevin Spacey, but NO ONE can hold a candle up to Gene Hackman's Lex !
The scenes with Marlon Brando are amazing - check out his cool eye make-up ( I fuckin LOVE Brando ! ) The first film is just epic, and most of the special effects hold up, but he power is in the story, and the actors - every single one of them are pitch perfect.

SUPERMAN 2 - Tarrence Stamp in a black pleather get-up wanting to rule the planet 'Huston' -for no other reason than to make everyone kneel before him, just so he can spare their life - need I say more !

ALIENS - Sigourney is SO androdgenous. She IS the film.

THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS - Why coulnd't Hawk-Eye have a boyfriend- some hot red blooded lad ? Ah, well ... Just substitute the chick for, uh ,yourself and have a god time jumping down water falls.

Raiders of The Lost Ark - The relationship between Indy and Marion is more brother and sister like, and Denholm Elliot is HOT... Then Speilberg had to fuck things up the second time around by throwing his screaming wife into the picture ( Blech !! ) Bring back Marion !
the best line / Indy to Salah :
" I'm just making this up as I go. "

    Anyhoo - Any reccomendations ?

I'm stuck in re-run city here

    Signing out -

    xx

The Empire Strikes Back got me through the summer of '80--the best of the Star Wars films for sure...

(Ratatouille is my favorite film of THIS summer so far--one of Pixar's best!)

    I'll check out transformers -
Blade Runner. Man ! you can't go wrong with sexy Rutger Hauer ( really HOT in the original 'Hitcher' /Major homosexual over tones in this one )

Oh, sfnicolas - sorry, my uhhh- skirt chaser alter-ego got all flipped w/ the 'Star Wars' thing ... I was obviously refering to 'Jedi' w/the 'Carrie's hot get-up ' comment. Yah, 'Empire' was BY FAR the best in the series... Yoda training Luke to "feel the force" ,and then Luke FACING the force with bad ol' papa ! Epic melodrama in space !!! A great dance with the devil; A great victory. And a great cliff-hanger.

Galaxy Quest Sig in a wig ! Poor Sig... OK..now I have to stop.

No worries cal--i was about to tell ya that Return of the Jedi just about ruined the summer of '83 with those damned Ewoks!!

Thankfully this summer has creative and intelligent rats in a Paris kitchen that could easily kick an Ewok's ass.

I'll stick with the movies I have seen this summer.
Transformers-- I liked it--great special effects -tried to be too 'cute' sometimes

License to Wed- OK-- Had a few laughs but mediocre acting

Live Free of Die Hard--Lots of action --highly unbelievable---- Lots of great one liners

Waitress--nice film--good acting but kinda slow at times---made me very hungry with all the pie references!!

I know, I see too many movies!

    Bio Matty-
I saw Tarnsformers...not my kind of movie...however, the lead chick IS the hottest woman I've seen in film. She reminds me of a young brunette Sharon Stone.

still haven't seen Transformers. I wasn't allowed to watch Thunder Cat's when I was a kid - (snuck a few episodes though) and that'd be a cool movie I think.

NRG - > Yah, man. Put 'Nashville at the top of your list. I am an Altman fanatic... '3 women' is another great one ... Sissy Spaceck And Shelley Duvall in a crazy alter-ego/ lesbian identy crisis !

Oh, man - ANYTHING with Shelly Duvall ! God damn.. bring her back !

Oh, and I noticed you had Hellen Mirran twice on your list - she was my favorite in 'Gosford' ... check her out in 'The Mosquito Coast' - I shouldn't say this, but her melt-down on the raft scene reminded me of my own dear mom... lol.

I do love me some Helen Mirren. If you do buy/rent, "The Queen," check out the commentary she offers of her perspective of playing that role.

I seem to watch mostly British films - Pride and Prejudice - the A&E version, not that recent rubbish w/ that insipid Keira Knightly.

    Sense & Sensibility - Emma Thompson/Kate Winslet
    Emma - w/ Gwyneth

Oh - A Tale of Two Cities - the 1935 version w/ Robert Coleman and Edna May Oliver - LOVE the scene where she fights wrestles with Madame Defarge

Oh Helen Mirren playing DCI Jane Tennison - more good stuff - and that's saying a lot since, typically the most suspense I can take is Murder She Wrote.

NRG -LOL !!! I'm with you on Kiera ( I see her as Winona's temporary stand in ) U tube has a few funny shorts of this actress ( can't remember her name ) doing a hillarious impersonation of Kiera and the actor opposite her is a dead ringer for Johnny - contemplating a 4th go-round on 'Pirats' ... funny stuff !

'Howard's End' is my favorite of the Merchant Ivory collection - The daydream scenes with the dreamer walking through the forrest of violets... beautiful cinematography.

4 old movies -- try rentals

MOON 44 -- in a scfi asteroid claim jumping, an unlikely fighter combat system requires convict fighter pilots to team up with punk video gamers as radar controllers. Hero looked like porn star jeff stryker.

KING RAT --Young British lieutenant Michael York wears a sarong in a Japanese prision camp while getting friendly with wheeler dealer American Sargent George Segal.

POINT BREAK -- undercover cop Keanu Reeves developes "hero worship" for sky diving, surfing bank robber.

The Original 1968 THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR --Insurance agent Faye Dunaway falls in love? with chess playing, arbtrage trading, part time bank robbing master mind Steve McQueen. Was this a het version of POINT BREAK?

Hey Cal - I just can't abide her, and I don't know why - perhaps it's her subtle resemblance to E.T. - or her weird jawline - oh, now I'm just being mean. Anyway - yes Howard's End - very good - what about "Remains of the Day"

    NRG -
I'm going to re-visit 'Queen' when I can ... She really made that woman , umm - Well, the story had compassion.

'Time bandits' is another one you might like. My favorite scene - the great escape from the hanging cage boxes, and of course Sean Connery as Agamemnon and Ian Holm as Napoleon ( remember him as Ash in ' Alien' ? ) -

Christopher Guest. Anything by him. I want to see him do a story on -Real Estate Agents !

Here's my list, guys... hard to keep it short:

DRAMA: "Glengarry GlenRoss" - amazing emsemble acting by the best in the business, with a screenplay by Mamet based on his play.

ROMANCE: "Latter Days" - low budget, flawed, but a lot to identify with for most guys, I think. And Sandvoss as a gay mormon missionary is utterly believeable and very hot.

COMEDY: "Scenes from the Class Struggle" in Beverly Hills - think "Eating Raoul" meets "Dynasty" - sort of. Wickedly funny with a gay subplot, and lines like "When you get a lot of rich, fat people determined to get thin, a few of them are going to die...it's just a rule of thumb."

ACTION: "Bullitt" - Steve McQueen at the top of his game, racing his bad-ass mustang against a hemi-cuda through the strees of SF.
