Finally did it! I bought a guitar. Hopefully to learn a few songs and wow someone with it, lol.

At the current moment, learning the basics through YouTube, but thought I'd ask YOU for song recommendations.

    Ideas?!

First two that come to mind are "Banana Pancakes" and "Better Together" by Jack Johnson.

I think the first one I learned was " fade out " by radiohead... easy finger patterns... straight after I learned "what its like" by everlast, and then "fast car" by tracy chapman....

I know, I like depressing guitar music..

So then I learned "breakfast at tiffany's" and "500 miles" to stop being so depressing lol

Start with something simple that you like. It increases the chances you'll stick with it.icon_smile.gif

edit.... OK, Led Zeppelin is good for learning blues patterns.

Trollileo saidIf I can do it on horn you can do it on guitar.

You should just do up-beats and fox calls.

Pretty much this. If you don't enjoy it there's no reason to keep doing it.

I hate you. I quit mellophone and I'm doing cymbals this year.

Aww, thanks, hon. I hate you, too. icon_wink.gif
(I don't blame you for switching; mellophones are horribly balanced, and marching horn music is excruciatingly dull.)

The body of the guitar has to gently rest against his girthful groin area. Then he can finger the neck of his instrument accordingly with optimum sex appeal.

    Unless he's standing up...

Hey. Hey. Hey. The only thing I can say about my instrument is that I'm a horny musician. I'm letting it all out.

And you're apparently good at fisting.

I agree. Learn something you already listen to regularly and enjoy.

First song I learned was Interpol - The New. Great intro.

    Hey Justarunner,
Mind sharin me where specifically on YouTube you are learning? I took guitar lessons a couple years back- but then put it down. I decided I want to try again this winter. If you found some good sites, let me know. Thanks!

"Classical Gas" from Mason Williams.... one of my ALL-time favorites... I remember when this came out on the "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" variety show......

This is the ORIGINAL, AND STILL THE BEST, STEREO HIT VERSION of the #2 Billboard Hit instrumental classic from 1968....

    Or, Williams' acoustic version....

Or his concert piece, from 1968...

I thought "Stairway To Heaven" was the standard song that everyone first learned on guitar. icon_biggrin.gif

Hmm... well for "tab" related things, I came across this site, and was trying these two songs:

    Imagine - John Lennon
    http://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/john-lennon-imagine-guitar-tab-s206t0

    Redemption Song -Bob Marley
    http://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/bob-marley-redemption-song-guitar-tab-s259t0

    Because... they "seemed" easy.

A friend just messaged me saying to learn these songs:

    Walk Away - Ben Harper
    Banana Pancakes - Jack Johnson
If I Ever Leave This World Alive - Flogging Molly
    The Scientist - Coldplay
    Fuck a Dog - Blink 182

    Thoughts?!

Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World is a fun song to be by yourself and just rage hard to. Unfortunately...it's funner when you have someone to do drums.

    None. For now.

Learn proper fretting and picking technique. Learn the notes on the fret board. Learn how to form chords.

From there, learn how to read music.

    Then learn songs.

    Above all, go take lessons.
