Does anybody know why the music is so much louder on a movie DVD than the dialog?

It is such a pain to have to keep adjusting the volume. I dont understand it.

This is just how most films are produced from the get go- they normally don't change the audio levels when mastering to DVD.

Dynamic audio is an effect better utilized in the theater, and unless you're going all out to re-create the atmosphere at home it can be annoying on less than stellar speakers..

About equalizing the audio for home release- I'd think you'd have too many folks involved up in arms over that kind of alteration to their work. I'd be surprised if that kind of stuff wasn't in contract.

There's a few different reasons why the sound appears loud at home:

-the audio transfer to DVD was done poorly
-the transfer was done with an emphasis on multichannel audio (5.1, etc.)
-you're watching a film with the audio set to a multi-channel audio when it's hooked up to a monoaural system/device
-the settings on your stereo/tv/whatever need to be tuned to maximum dvd audio playback

Sound design is an art unto itself really and there's lots of lit out there on the subject as it applies to home theater technology (if you're interested). Now that I've proved what a geek I am, back to the gym! icon_smile.gif

Because it sounds the best while coming from all 7 speakers (well 6 and a sub)

I don't know how you do your sound, but out AV receiver has whats called a "night mode" which will normalise the sound to a consistent level.

You might want to see if you have anything like that on your gear.
