Koch Industries paid bribes in a half-dozen countries to secure lucrative contracts and sold millions of dollars of petrochemical equipment to Iran by making an end-run around the U.S. trade ban, according to a new exposé.

Headlining the cover of Bloomberg Markets magazine’s November issue, the lengthy investigative report, titled “The Secret Sins of Koch Industries,” asserts that Charles and David Koch, the billionaire brothers who are major backers of the tea party movement, are running a company embroiled in several scandals.

Of course, anyone who actually takes the time to read the article won't find the sensational story you are portraying.

BTW, why so much hate for the Koch brothers? I think they are great! They support full marriage equality for gays and all sorts of other socially liberal causes.

It's funny that they support marriage equality now, since they disowned their gay brother decades ago.

In terms of their bribing international officials and selling to Iran despite an embargo, why is this any surprise to anyone? These are deeply, deeply sociopathic men. They care for no one and nothing but money.

I have read the article. Are you naive enough to believe that their "internal investigation" led to "mass firings" or whatever?

Putting that aside, feel free to explain away their selling chemicals to Iran during an embargo. Not very patriotic. icon_rolleyes.gif

Suppose you were going to write a political-thriller potboiler. You might invent something like this: a family of billionaires who support right-wing causes and pose as super-patriots, while actually using their political influence to cover for wrongdoing on multiple fronts — not just endangering workers and the environment, but even making deals with foreign regimes that are actively anti-United States and sponsor terrorists.

Reviewers would, of course, turn up their noses — this is patently unrealistic, super-villains like that don’t exist in real life.

Oh, wait. Koch Brothers Flout Law With Secret Iran Sales.
    ...
So we’re living in a bad novel, and to borrow from Brad DeLong, the hard right is worse than you can possibly imagine, even if you take account of the fact that it’s worse than you can possibly imagine.

    Ahem ....
    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-02/koch-brothers-flout-law-getting-richer-with-secret-iran-sales.html

In May 2008, a unit of Koch Industries Inc., one of the world’s largest privately held companies, sent Ludmila Egorova-Farines, its newly hired compliance officer and ethics manager, to investigate the management of a subsidiary in Arles in southern France. In less than a week, she discovered that the company had paid bribes to win contracts. Legal or Illegal to pay bribes for contracts???? I forget

“Those activities constitute violations of criminal law,” Koch Industries wrote in a Dec. 8, 2008, letter giving details of its findings. The letter was made public in a civil court ruling in France in September 2010; the document has never before been reported by the media. Nevermind ... Even THEY knew it was illegal

Egorova-Farines was removed her from the inquiry in August 2008 and fired her in June 2009, calling her incompetent, even after Koch’s investigators substantiated her findings. Little girl ... tsk tsk tsk did you THINK they weren't going to fire you for that?

It seems like the Iran deals at the very least went against the concept of a sanction, if not against the spirit of the company's values "Integrity and Compliance". And saying that they're gay friendly doesn't necessarily excuse the fact they're dealing with state companies in a country where they still execute people for being gay.

Just because they're supportive of gay marriage doesn't excuse wrong doing, or over looking said wrongdoing. If you want to call liberal politicians out over their faults, be willing to do it over conservative ones too.

The termination letters from Koch's subsidiary in the French case lay out the bribes and transactions in detail, and blame it on the one employee...except the French courts point out that since those financial transactions required managerial approval across multiple levels, it is impossible to say this is just one employee's actions.

Finally, the Benzene case alone is shocking. They admitted in court that they falsified records and attempted to cover up the fact that they had emitted tons of cancer causing chemicals into the atmosphere. It seems like at the very least, their petrochemical division is replete with corporate mismanagement and a pervasive culture of covering up the problems to avoid cost.

Oh, that's right, George Kaiser's alleged wrongdoings absolve the Koches of absolutely everything.

    Check.

plenty of alleged wrongs on the other side too

Kaiser should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent, if prosecutors have reason to believe he has broken the law. Simple, imho.

I don't believe he should be exonerated by the gay community simply because he's liberal. However simply saying that 'the other side is doing it too' is hardly an answer to the original topic, or to the discussion of conservative/liberal support in the gay community.

Personally, I find the Solyndra example pales in comparison to the wealth, influence, and hypocrisy of the Koch brothers. Did Solyndra's actions result in the release of toxic chemicals and the deaths of people who lived near their physical infrastructure? Do they do business in countries under sanction, with governments that execute teenagers for being gay? Do they attempt to blame those actions on single employees?

Those are the major problems I have with the Koch brothers.
