Ok, I don't mean to be ripping on the channel, ok maybe I do...but my roommates watch nothing but MTV. I stopped watching it in high school because of how bad all the shows were/got (teen mom, real world, jersey shore).

I understand watching it every once and a while, but I can only take so much. Does anyone here still watch MTV on a consistent basis?

When I had cable, I only watched MTV for the True Life shows. Everything else really sucked.

I stopped watching MTV long ago. I might watch again when they, you know, start playing music videos again.

Haha, I watch MTV, including everything except Teen Wolf. I think most of whats on the network is either: fake, ignorant, terrible representation, all about publicity, etc etc etc. However, I'm entertained, and some people featured on the network I can relate to a little bit.

Even though a lot of it is trashy, there are some aspects that shine a good light on today's issues. MTV has been really good about gay rights, with including casts for young adolescent LGBTs for two decades now. Sure, maybe some of them who they put on are overly promiscuous and drunk, but there have been a fair share of level headed cast members who explain a good story. Maybe some of the viewing for me was productive, giving me an obvious boost to come out and make friends and be me around my peers. But who knows.

I think the "good" shows like Made and True Life, are free from negative reception because of spotlighting the struggles or genuine lifestyles of young, modern adolescents. icon_smile.gif

Compared to them, you are not normal. Compared to everyone else, you're fine...

I LOFF SVU. In fact, all the Law and Order shows are God.

What is sad is that MTV used to be ground breaking TV. The original seasons of the REAL WORLD weren't all about getting everyone drunk and in the hot tub.

Season 3 - featuring characters like Puck and the first openly gay with aids character Pedro - was a very compelling season to watch in the early 90's and helped change some attitudes in this country.

Plus, I, too, miss the music on Music Television.

Now, I don't even recognize the channel anymore. I may stop once in a while to see what's new, but for the most part - pass. Epic Fail.

T_Flex saidTrash can be fun. I'm addicted to Jersey Shore icon_redface.gif

I do miss the old MTV2 though, when they actually played music videos, and good ones at that.

    (dating myself here)
I miss the original MTV. I remember the excitement the day it launched. It was like nothing before ever seen. Prior to MTV, it was really difficult to catch a music video and was a real treat when you did. My roomies and I had it on the TV all the time. Haven't watched in at least 20 years now. It really went to hell quickly.

True, and the videos were cool as hell. Today they are all big budget mini-movie trailers.

Remember this one - cheap ass, but brilliant:

I don't understand why it's called Mtv when the only time music is important is during the VMAs. Other than that I see flashes of Mtv as I'm surfing channels.

seems that mtv now its all about real life series, and forget the music, you hardly see videos on it, but for a very boring day, maybe i can see 5 mins of the show, so i can consider that as a guilty pleasure icon_eek.gif

Like some of the other dudes on here, I remember when MTV debuted and it was AWESOME!! I watched it all of the time. I remember the first Real World and the characters were awesome. Puck and Pedro and others.

I think that some of the episodes of True Life are the most compelling experiences in television. One of them "True Life: I'm Poor" was so tragic, so defeating... it brought a vivid portrait of poverty in America. I brought tears to my eyes for weeks later.

Then they created some of the most inane, formulaic TV shows that were not ground breaking... they were pathetic.

So last night, home with a fever, I was channel surfing and ran across the new season of Real World and I stopped for a moment because, well... because I saw a really hot guy. DUH... Apparently the really hot guy is the "gay" guy in the Real World house and he had gotten smashed and been insutling and abusive to the female roommates. So he calls a meeting and tells the girls that he is fucked up because his parents have rejected him. He says, "right before I came here, by dad called me a faggot and threw me out of the house" crying and vulnerable. (and still hot).

So the straight douchebags are watching and one of them said in a voiceover, "There are only certain times a man should cry.... and this isn't one of them." It cut away to two shirtless straight dudes laughing at the gay guy and talking about how uncomfortable he made them... I want to continjue to watch to see what happens, but those guys were so offensive and dumb. Another part of me wanted to turn it off and say, "haters gotta hate".

I remember when MTV was about MUSIC and not stupid shows. It had bite and it was edgy. from Yo!MTV Rap, Unplugged, MTV Oddities, etc... Actual good shows that stayed true to the purpose of the channel which was to promote music. Not anymore. Now they have shows like Jersey Shore and 16 & Pregnant. Even Real World has fallen off the mark because it's now gone in a totally different direction. There's nothing real about Real World anymore. It stopped being real years ago along with MTV.

They should change it to FTV (Fake TV).

^ Yeah, I got sucked into this Real World fiasco. It was really shitty for them to do that. One of them, Zach, is hot. But doing that, and having that stank attitude is a major turn-off. Frank, the bisexual guy, is cute, but he is fucked up (now I know why).

Yeah, I only watch MTV for Teen Wolf (the gayest show on t.v. Stiles is so cute and Tyler Posey's ass and pecs...) and now the Real World.

They have a really awesome show called "I Used to Be Fat" and it helps kids that are obese lose weight before starting college. It teaches them how to work out (most have never been inside a gym) with a trainer, and what to eat.

True Life is also one of their best. And I will sit around all day and watch a True Life marathon.

I hardly watch it..the only times I do is occasionally on Jersdays. But even then, I don't dedicate my night to the show. If my roommates are watching Jersey Shore I'll watch it with them..but I can only watch for like 30 minutes before I get tired of it lol.

That's the new season of The Real World. I tried to watch it because it's set in San Diego this season and I LOVE San Diego. But all the people on it are just so unlikeable, I couldn't take it.

The guy you're describing says he's bisexual, not gay, and he's a total utter douchebag. He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He also clearly has an alcohol problem. I think the producers cast loose cannons like that to up the drama factor.

I remember Carson Daily, when the VMAs were about the music and not an image, Daria, Clone High, Celebrity Deathmatch, Eon Flux, Video Countdowns, when half (or more) of the MTV Movie Awards weren't all won by "Twilight", when MTV actually had some connection with music and teens (remember coming home and watching RHCT, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Fiona Apple, System of a Down, etc), True Life, TRL, and the early seasons of Real World.

Sadly...all these are gone. We're left with a station that focuses on some stupid 'reality' show that's pretty much scripted. I stopped watching MTV around 2005 when they replaced music videos with "NEXT" or "Date My Mom"....it's a joke now. icon_rolleyes.gif

It's embarrassing the people on Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, etc etc sell their sould for a big payout and some instant fame, which will be gone within five years. MTV is so bad, the Real World Franchise has been in a city for the second time for how many seasons now? It was cool in 1992 when it first came out, even through the first Vegas cast. After that, it turned into a fake, semi scripted reality show like everything else.

MTV has a platform to do something beneficial to younger viewers rather than trying to convince them it's ok to be tan, juiced and semi literate.
