I hurt my calf right at the back of my knee a week ago and the doctor told me today that I strained my calf. He gave me orders to ice it twice a day and to take ibuprofen and after a few days start stretching it again. Obviously I can't do much with cardio right now, but does anyone know some good workouts I could do with upper body and torso while I'm off my leg?

Well, some cardio is still possible. Two major options:

    1) Many gyms have a hand bike machine, most often of use to people in wheelchairs. You sit at the machine and grasp a pair of handles like bike pedals, and turn them around and around with your arms.

    2) Check your pool. Many will have a device that looks like two cylinders of styrofoam side by side with a rope running through each lengthwise. Place it between your thighs so that when you're swimming one cylinder is above your legs and the other is below. Cross your ankles, and swim without kicking.

Thanks Bionerd, good suggestions but I think I lack the self confidence to get in the pool and not worry about my appearance. We'll see...
