Question for all you guys in the LA and surrounding areas. I am totally new to this whole scene and will be in LA soon. I have never been with a guy or been to a gay bar or anything. I have seen a couple episodes of the "Queer as ...?" on showtime and there was a dance bar on there. I'm looking for something like that. Any input on the best place to check out. I can drive whereever between Long Beach/LA etc.

Also, is there anything I should know going to a gay bar? Any etiquette to know or anything I should expect different than a straight bar?

    Thanks guys.

The events in LA vary week by week. When will you be here?

Well, for a place with dancers I guess you could go to 11. It's located in west hollywood, on Santa Monica and Larrabee. They have dudes hanging from the ceiling right above the bar doing some stuff, and a plat for where guys dance on by the front door.
Most other places are just chill. Rage has some dancing too, but personally it's not my thing, but you can check it out too. It's a block west of 11 on San Vicente and Santa Monica.

OH yea.. Fubar also has some dancing.. I've only been there once, but I think the days it gets crowded are on... Thrusdays, Fridays and Saturdays. I think Thursdays and fridays have the biggest crowd. That too is in west hollywood, located on Santa Monica and Laurel. Which is a bout a mile or two east east of the other clubs.
As for etiquette, there really is none.

Rage will be the biggest club out of the two of them fyi.

Tigerheat on Thursday nights is great, especially if you can get into the VIP (Heaven) lounge, which shouldn't be too hard for you. (In lieu of washboard abs, I'm friends with the DJ and his partner.) The building itself is amazing - a 1927 Spanish-Moroccan gem with an amazing outdoor patio between the VIP lounge http://www.avalonhollywood.com/spiderclub.html and the main Tigerheat theater area.

It's a young crowd and a fun scene.

i have to concur with both metalxracr and seattle_eric.

a pub crawl on santa monica will be sure to provide some alcoholic funtimes that will later be only partially remembered. eleven to the abbey to east/west, fiesta cantina to rage (though rage never actually did it for me) are all walking distance from one another; the troubadour too if there's a good show that day, which, incidentally has a pretty great bar.

however if you're set on the dancing, which it seems you are, i'd have to second the reccomendation for tigerheat. it's a large venue that always gets packed. the kids (being that it's an 18+ event) can sometimes make it feel slightly circus-y but if loud pop music and drunken hot dog consumption does it for you, this is the place to be.

i've been meaning to make it out to here lounge which i also hear is fantastic but have yet to attend so can provide no actual experience to back that rumor up.

    Welcome to Lala Land!

    You should check out www.westhollywood.com

It has everything that is going on each particular day. The main clubs and bars in Weho are Factory, Rage, Mickys (will be reopened again in July), Ultra Suede, Abbey, Eleven, Here, East West Lounge, Cantina, Mother Lode, Trunks, etc.

Here lounge is good too. It's right off of santa monica, just south of it, on Robertson Blvd.

Here lounge is really just a place to hang out with a lot of friends. It's more about hanging out rather than dancing.

Another place for dancing that I forgot was Factory. You go west on santa monica and head south on La Peer dr. It's pretty cool. I've only been once so I couldn't tell you what days it gets crowded.

Cherry Pop on Saturdays is the new big thing, but really, we have to know what weekend you'll be here to advise you properly.

Oh, then it's easy. You're here for Pride weekend, so if you want a Queer-as-Folk-style dance party there is only one choice: Wonderland on the Paramount Studios lot.

Seriously, there's no alternative. The dancing gym gays go where Tom Whitman tells us to go.

Maybe it is because I think of you as an academic but it is hard for me to imagine you as a dancing gym bunny, squarejaw.

I'm a semi-retired dancing gym bunny. But about 12 years ago couldn't have kept me from getting up on a box if you tried.
