Only threats at this point? They should have done this before they passed the anti-gay laws and maybe it would have persuaded them not to pass those laws in the first place.

jprichva saidAnti-gay beliefs in Africa are usually attributed--not wrongly--to evangelical Christian influences. But there is another reason why they are so persistent and so vicious in that region: for many former colonies, especially those of Great Britain, homosexuality is seen as western, decadent, and part of the entire destruction of the fabric of society that came with the humiliation of being made a colony. So, to them, it becomes a matter of ethnic and nationalist pride, and an expression of hatred for their own colonial past, to be violently anti-gay. This is what animates those who are not themselves religious, but it even affects the religious ones too.

It's hard to see what can be done about this. Attacking these people purely on a religious basis is simply not enough, and won't work.

that is an aspect had not heard or considered before. Introducing nationalism as an opportunitic coinfection makes it a very powerful force.
