The Decline and Fall of Violence

"In tribal societies, hunter-gatherers and hunter-horticulturalists, an average of about 15 percent of people met their ends through violence. In the 20th century, if you try to come up with the highest estimate you can, combining all the wars, all the genocides, all the man-made famines, you get to about 3 percent."

- Society is less violent now than in almost any time in history.

- Current highest estimate of violence is 3%, including man made famines, such as civil war.

MAIN REASONS FOR THE DECLINE OVER THE LAST 2 DECADES

(Crime has been cut in half)

1. Increase in prison population has grown from 500k to 3 million.

2. A lot of police

3. Rise and fall of crack cocaine markets.

4. Legalization of abortion in the 70's so the people who statistically would be most at risk to create crime, were never born.

Crime has been falling even during the economy being bad.
