Dennis Ritchie passed away today. Who is Ritchie? The JAVA kids these days probably don't even know who he is.

Co-inventor of C and UNIX, how about that for a CV?

Rest in peace, oh lord of C.

Ritchie was best known as the creator of the C programming language and a key developer of the Unix operating system, and as co-author of the definitive book on C, The C Programming Language, commonly referred to as K&R (in reference to the authors Kernighan and Ritchie).

He is a TRUE giant of computing.

“His pointer has been cast to void *; his process has terminated with exit code 0.” May he rest in C heaven he created himself.

Does anyone these days even know what computer programming is? Not that many did back in the day but prior to the pc etc when you bought a computer you had to know something about the operating systems. Hence classes in fortran and assembler etc even at some highschools like mine.

    My first C program: 3D, plaid, 4-player Pong. Seriously. I think I was 9.

RIP Ritchie. You may not have been as cool and sociable as Jobs, but without your brilliance the technological world we know today would not exist.

Ironic that he and Jobs should die so near in time to each other, given that the Mac graphical interface which Jobs "acquired" from Xerox is now running on Ritchie's UNIX as MacOS X (in all its various cat forms: cheetah, puma, jaguar, panther, tiger, leopard, snow leopard, lion.) Two giants lost to us.
