I do it, it's great for your mid-section, heaps of women do it in my class, and only a few (very hot) men.

I'm pretty lucky because my instructor is a man and he trains my going to courses called, "Pilates for men."

Sometimes he gives advice though like, "Pull up your testicles," and that's not so helpful to most of the class, but at least I know what he means.

Muscles stretch a great deal. But don't mistake this attribute with the marketing you see on TV about how this or that exercise will give you "long, lean muscles" as if people who don't do Pilates are somehow stubby and fat.

Looking thinner will make your limbs and torso look proportionately "longer." But it's a stupid sales pitch, designed to appeal to women who wish they had long limbs like a supermodel (who are usually very tall).

Pilates exercises are very challenging, and will enhance your strength and flexibility. This is its GOOD feature, and something you should definitely do. Plus, it always comes with a qualified trainer.

But leanness comes from loss of fat due to metabolic acceleration and/or caloric restriction. Pilates can be strenuous, but it isn't the first exercise I run toward to burn fat.

My recommendation: plan a healthy diet, do Pilates, do cardio training. And don't be afraid to pick up some weights and give the big muscles of your body something to do.

i have been doing pilates for about 2-3 years.
i have tried group gym mat classes and private and semi private classes with the machines-tower, reformer, cadillac, chair, box.
it is really great.
stretches you, challenges you, relaxes you, increases flexibility. mostly women in the class but surprisingly there are straight men and gay men too.
it helps core developement and posture.
