southbeach1500 saidHe is extremely lucky. Asylum status is difficult to obtain, but, ironically, not as difficult to obtain as more "temporary" legal ways of entering the USA, such as the H-1B visa.

Anybody who is able to legally get into the USA needs to be recognized as being quite lucky, as the entire U.S. immigration system is stacked against all "aliens" (as they call them) who try to legally come to the USA.

I agree, but I must say that when I was being chased by a car full of armed men who were shooting at my car, the last thing I thought was "gosh, I'm so lucky!" icon_smile.gif

    Ooops... Is "he" you?

Yup, I am he. :-) You're right about how flawed the system is, though. I'll be the first to say that it's in dire need of reform.

Why should he really? Many of those illegals probably went for the same route only to be put through the same BS, its almost as if they want illegality.
I didn't take offense at his saying that I was "extremely lucky." In many ways he's right. I just pointed out that at the time when there were people trying to kill me the thought obviously didn't cross my mind. Plus, he didn't know that I am the subject of the article... So it's all good.

Nice article. I can probably arrange an interview with a friend of mine who's a journalist when you get here. Just let me know.

Congratulations and thank you so much for your courage in getting the message out. Oh, and great picture in the paper. You look quite dashing!

I've heard so many horror stories from friends trying to secure papers. I'm quite convinced one was forced to pay a bribe.

On a lighter note, I wanted to let you know that I visited First Ave. Deli for breakfast this week, heard "Constantino" no less than three times! icon_biggrin.gif

    Stay safe.

Your friend's case illustrates part of the problem with how convoluted the immigration process has become. I worked as a legal assistant at an immigrant aid agency in DC... I'm well acquainted with how big a problem this is.

Anyway, that's awesome that you were at my home-a-block-away-from-home! Next time you're there say hi to Susie for me! She texts me every morning to say hello. :-)

I'm liking it. Here are some of the pictures I've taken: http://on.fb.me/oVIhTS I'm headed towards Mobile now, then walking along the coast to New Orleans, so I'll get to see more of the state.

You didn't go to a Crimson Tide game did you? Noooooooo.

In my opinion, Southwest AL is way nicer than Northwest AL. I think you'll really like Mobile.

I hope everyone is being nice to you. Have you ate any grits yet, had any sweet tea? Have they made you tried fried cornbread anywhere?

Yeah, I went to a 'Bama game... http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/1883026
I've had sweet tea, but I have to say I still prefer unsweet. Grits are good. Fried cornbread I haven't had yet... Should I get some?

Bama sucks. But, I guess I say that cus I bleed orange and blue. Grits are good aren't they? Next you gotta mix your eggs in with your grits (that's the real southern way to do it).

Dude, you are in the south - everything is fried. So you should try everything fried.
