Despite sweeping pessimism about the nation's fortunes and his own sliding approval ratings, President Obama leads potential Republican rivals Mitt Romney and Rick Perry in hypothetical general-election match-ups, according to a new TIME poll.

Why do you think this is?

it's cuz the GOP doesn't really have viable candidates. the religious right won't support Romney (out here in the inter-mountain west, his LDS background will help him rather than hurt him), Perry is self-distructing b4 r eyes, and Cain just looks worse and worse with each passing day (he's just not likeable imo).

On the most basic level,he is the best known politician(with a track record) in national/federal politics. Whatever you think of him,he is at least familiar and predictable. That does count in his favour in such uncertain times.

He`s also aided by very poor quality alternatives. All of the Republican nominees come across as either inexperienced,or lack full party support,or too extreme, etc.

It`s a long way off yet,but Romney seems the most likely to win the nomination but doesn`t command full party support,so he`ll very probably struggle against Obama.

    It`s reminiscent of 1996,electorally.
