Are there any sane religious leaders in the world?

Actually I know a few, like the Episcopal church I belong to with the Lesbian minister. It's like a little community charity. The minister there doesn't say anything hurtful about anyone. That's no way to become a Mega-Church.

Now Senator McCain is rejecting the endorsement of John Hagee. I'm sure he will soon be rejecting the endorsement of Ron Parsely too. These guys are as nuts as Revereand Wright.

Even the Popes make insane statements and take insane actions. What is it about Christianity and islam that cause people to be so over the top?
    Is it a monotheism thing?

I don't know all that much about religion so, any help from the more knowledgeable would be helpful.

The Lama is an ass too, though not without a few redeeming qualities. I was glad to see McCain reject Hagee, but I didn't buy his crying ignorance. McCain has been getting into bed with the Religious Right over the last eight years in preparation for this campaign, and lost a good deal of street cred with me. But, I hope he continues to wash his hands of these people.

I agree that in order to cater to the Republican base Senator McCain has been courting these nuts. I'm happy to see they are way over the top even for him.

The Christian Taliban are a large hunk of the Republican party, I hope we can win without them. But all in all, good ridance.

The US seems to have its' share of extreme religious views. In that respect it has more in common with some of the Middle Eastern countries (including Israel) then the Western European countries, Canada or Australia.

I am glad that Senator McCain is showing his true colours in rejecting the far-right Christian movement. It is a pity that politics and the need to woo voters has forced him to warm up to the immoral minority in recent years.

Well this is interesting.... John and I are both Episcopal... I guess it shows one can have very differing political views, but share religious conviction.

I am a atheist but they're (Saint marks, Toledo Episcopal church )the best charitable organization in town. Besides, I really like the people in the congregation, really nice folks. The Pastor and her partner are fantastic.

Three cheers for the Episcopal Church, Christianity for the intellectually curious! The few remaining knuckle dragging bigots are seceding, or more accurately, being sliced off WITHOUT their buildings and assets!

Israel DOES have its slice of loony religious nuts, though the slice is not large. However, unfortunately, the two major voting blocs are so evenly balanced that in the parliamentary system, a tiny little political party of serious religion thugs holds the balance of power repeatedly, depending on which side they choose to form a government with.

Not a great system. This is why, aside from the territory-grabbing and settlement-building, Israel also does things like permitting the Ortho-nuts complete control over matters like marriage and conversion rituals. They demand that as the price of their loyalty, and no one has the political balls to tell them to fuck off.

My take is that being a religious leader gives you power -- a whole bunch of people who will follow you, give you money, vote the way you tell them, etc.

It makes me sick seeing how many born-again preachers are raking in so much money from their flocks of largely uneducated, poor and disadvantaged people. They promise them that a green prayer rag or spring water in a vial will cure all their ills, or get them a new car, or miraculously put money in their banks. They really promise all this shit! Think I'm kidding? Catch one of the many born-again hucksters on Direct TV any day of the week! These bums have fleets of cars, some have jets, many have multiple homes, seriously! Tax free - and their flocks mostly look like they haven't money for dinner or never made it out of high school, yet they give their limited money to their born-again preachers, hoping for that new car or some change in their fortunes. This is insane.

Here in the Philippines, presidential candidates ALWAYS woo the leaders of various 'protestant' organizations, which is a kind way of describing the cults that spring up around certain megalomaniacs.

It's scary because I grew up to one of these televangelists ranting JUST BEFORE the weekend cartoons. icon_neutral.gif He always struck me as craaaazy. He'd start off in a quiet voice then gradually amp it up until he was raving and crying and everyone in the gym or auditorium he was ranting in would be doing the same. Then people would go up the stage and he'd scream for god to heal them all the while sobbing... icon_rolleyes.gif

And presidents always seek them out because they have a sizeable voting population that votes for whoever their leader endorses.
