I am now a construction worker...

I liked Alabama and southern college football so much that I've decided to put the walk on hold for a while and stay here through Thanksgiving. I'm going to another game this Saturday, and the people I'm tailgating with are bringing grilled salmon. Doesn't get much better than that.

Actually, the real reason I've decided to stay is that I want to take a more in-depth look at life in the South. I've landed a job in construction. Since Columbia didn't teach me how to do manual labor, I'm coming in as an unskilled worker. That means I'll probably start out just hauling heavy shit around all day. I start on Monday, and I can't wait!

I've also secured a second job, working part time as a waiter at a Mexican restaurant, where most of the staff--including the manager--are here illegally. With all the talk about the immigration law that went into effect here this month, this will be a great way to really become a part of that community and fully get their story. And since I'll also be working side-by-side with good ol' red-blooded Americans at the construction gig, I'll get to hear their thoughts as well.

This is an unplanned twist to my project, but I'm actually pretty psyched about it. I think it will add great value to the book and the journey. Not to mention that I was starting to worry about money, and this will allow me to save up some more cash and carry on with more peace of mind.

I'll make the official "announcement" soon on facebook and my blog, but I wanted to let y'all in on the secret first.

This is excellent. U should get a very good perspective on life in the south from a working class point of view.

I'm glad you're doing this and I really hope that it gives you a fresh perspective. Hopefully you can live as they live, and remove the lens that college wants you to look from when you interact with these people.

Well dude, if you are gonna stay in the State for a while we should meet up!

Where are you going to temporarily settle down at? In Tuscaloosa?

I admire what you are doing Constantine - the perspectives you will develop, and the impressions you will recieve, will truly last a lifetime. I think this brief stop in the deep south will do you, and all of your followers here on RJ and on FB, a world of good.

I love it when people follow the beat of their own drummer and make sure to take time to experience life and live it on their own terms. Can't wait to hear more about your adventures!

Hey, yeah. I'll be in Tuscaloosa. Let's definitely meet up. We could get some Dreamland Ribs. I had them in Birmingham, but I want to try the real thing.

Only one thing. though... please don't hate me, but... when in Rome...

This is awesome. You will really like it. Alabama is criticized, and made fun of, but I think that it is one of the prettiest states in the Union. Tuscaloosa is a beautiful city, right by the river.
