Hey I just moved to Montreal for grad school and have zero gay friends. I met my now-sort-of-ex boyfriend through badminton while I was living in Toronto, and am hoping to repeat that formula by getting to know guys in a platonic context first.

Actually I'm here for less than a year, so I'm on an accelerated schedule icon_wink.gif. Nonetheless I'm kinda wary of village gays, and am looking for a way to meet better guys around my age (23) who are in university...

Maybe I have really bad gaydar, but Montreal/McGill seems a lot straighter than Toronto/UT lol. I see cute guys everywhere on campus, but they dont' look gay.

Lol. Try going to a Jesuit college. One of my friends posted on his facebook that our school was voted one of the worst in the country for lgbt people.

I used to work at McGill. Am surprised by your quandary. Also, I think gays look a little less gay with each passing year, so they're harder to spot. I found this online:

    Queer McGill

Queer McGill is a non-profit organization under the Student Societies of McGill University (SSMU), which aims to create safe space and community for queer students. Queer McGill provides a variety of services for queer (including but not limited to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, tran(s)sexual, two-spirited, asexual, intersex, pansexual, questioning, and anyone who identifies with the queer moniker) students and their allies. As a feminist, sex-positive, anti-racist, anti-classist, anti-ableist, and anti-ageist organization, Queer McGill works to fight all forms of oppression. Through a variety of programming, including discussion groups, workshops, lecture series, and dance parties, Queer McGill provides space, opportunity, and a voice for queer students on campus and around Montreal.

Looking to get involved? Email us at queermcgill@gmail.com or come hang out with us at our office (SSMU Building 432). We’ve got couches, books, rainbows, and a safe space to talk.

Also, a good chat site in Montreal is gay411.com.

There are tons of gay sports clubs in montreal that you can probably find on Google.

If you wanna meet guys *outside the village*, there some .out-of-the-village nights that are organized in straight clubs.

This saturday, october 22nd, there's the "Mec Plus Ultra" night at the Belmont, on St-Laurent. Not the McGill ghetto, but still in Montreal. I think it's very popular in the city, never went but heard a lot about it !

But I agree with the previous posts, it's getting more and more difficult nowadays, since all the straight are turning into metrosexual douchebags, and the rise of the "straight acting/looking" gay...

No offense but I don't recommend Queer Mcgill.

They're a great bunch of people, but I think they're just a bit too political.

I go to McGill and there are tons of gay guys.

All the guys at McGill seem gay to be honest lol...but they're just hipster

Anyway, just start making friends and socializing. You'll have plenty in no time.

Also outside the Village scene, check out the Royal Phoenix Bar,
corner of St-Laurent & Bernard in Mile-End. Very diverse crowd and
crazy line up of nights (visit their website for events).

I like athletic guys haha so yea sports is a good setting. We actually flew here from Toronto earlier this year to compete at the g-bleu badminton tournament. I started dating my partner a couple months later haha.

When I moved to Toronto last winter, I didn't know anyone, but my new badminton buddies at the gym happen to be gay, and from then on my gay circle exploded. I guess I need to meet those first one or two guys.

I can't believe no one in my class is gay (openly at least). Would have made the first step so much easier lol

My best Canadian friend went to McGill. He had no trouble meeting people. Just get involved in your regular activities.

lol, when I was there a few years ago there were many "gay friend networks", just like there are many "straight friend networks". No, they don't actually all belong to one big group. Like with all groups of friends, you just need to meet the right people, in the right circumstances, to get into a group...
