So here's my post expressing my disdain to the new movement in the vampire genre - the hip, sleek, & "sexy" vampires. icon_rolleyes.gif

The two productions that have pushed this movement full throttle: Twilight & True Blood.

Yes, I've seen a Twilight movie & a few ep's of True Blood, so I have validity with my opinions.

Are there any of you other Realjocker's out there who, too, don't care for this fad?

Or, rather - would like to see the "sexiness" of said movies/shows be pushed onto the back burner & see the creepiness of 'em pulled back into the forefront? I def am one of those guys!

After all, If I wanna see "sexy" & muscular dudes flaunting it - that's what my several minutes with a Straight porno is for! icon_twisted.gif

Yeah but honestly gay porn doesn't do it for me. Just my preference! icon_cool.gif

The current state of Vampires in pop culture does annoy me. Particularly the Twilight saga (I cannot get over the sparkling in the sun thing icon_evil.gif ). True Blood has it's moments of 'facepalmery' but I love the show. All in all I really do hope that vampires can return to the horror genre and leave the romance/drama behind. In the meantime I'll read my Anita Blake (LKH) novels - if you like detailed, gorey, vampire violence with a strong plot then this series is the bees knees.

I never watched or cared to watch any teeny vampire movies, but if if does contribute anything to make pale guys a bit more popular, I hope it lasts.

I love Vampire Diaries because they mix the sexy with badness. Gives you the life of tormented vampires.

I would take it back to Louis in Interview with a Vampire. He was so whiny and brooding. I loved the movie, but like Lestat said at the end:

“Louis, Louis, Louis...Still whining, Louis! Are you quite finished? I've had to listen to that for centuries!”

And why can't they be like the vampires in the Lost Boys biting into people's heads, and tossing their bodies into a camp fire? That scene was gory and horrific, but great.

Twilight and True Blood should never be discussed together.

Yeh, this all goes back to Lestat. Anne Rice really started the whole troubled romantic vampire trend. Twilight isn't even that original... she lifted nearly all of it from earlier novels and gave it a Mormon-inspired twist.

There actually are still gory/scary vampire stories, they just aren't as popular. I recently watched a vampire apocalypse movie called Priest that was mostly cheesy but I really liked the style of it. And one of the best books I read last year was called The Passage, which was about a virus that turns most of the population into bloodthirsty vampires.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight series, Angel, Charmed etc to me are in the same league of bubblegum horror where they are really ove stories with a little vamp make up thrown in.

Interview with a Vampire, True Blood have a little more credibility and are entertaining for sure. The bigger dawgs would be the Blade movies, Underworld movies and other related blood sucking movies (any Zombie movie, any Alien movie) etc.

Hasn't there always been a sexual or romantic element to vamps?

can't stand the twit-lite series. only just made it thru the 1st book w/o vomitting. it's condescending 2 young ppl's intelligence (haha, do NOT say that's an oxymoron).

there is something psychosexual about vampires--taking what they want, hypntozing their victims, puncturing, raping, drinking bodily fluids--that makes them alluring while repellent.

Vampires have always represented predatory characteristics and reflect whatever society wants to be but can't. It used to be suave, mysterious and scary.

Now its blatantly sexual/homosexual and viciously violent.

    Welcome to 2011 icon_razz.gif

Sexual, yes: this is because vampires are supposed to be seductive. It helps them hunt. It's a weapon.
    Romance, not so much.

twilight is lame, i dont really consider true blood in the same category as the vampires in true blood are not fluffy and cute coming to save u and sparkle in the sun. They're sex starved monsters.

Agreed. Dracula was sensual, but he certainly never expressed remorse about killing.

Twilight is awful. I never read the books, but I couldn't stand the movies. I think I only saw the first two.

I watch True Blood, but I find it more comically absurd than anything else. It's definitely not for horror fans. The vampires are more blood thirsty than in Twilight, but the whole Sookie - Bill - Eric thing is really making them seem pathetic.

I think (hope!) this fad is coming to an end. Not even the shut-in cat ladies seem excited about the new Twilight movie.

It seems like people are starting to move on to The Hunger Games, which is not about sparkly abstinence vampires.

I hope the fad ends so I can talk about preternatural creatures without someone bringing up love triangles or 'cute' werewolves. Vampires, witches, werewolves, etc. are suppose to be scary and mysterious and the stories are suppose to be about survival. I hate it when things go mainstream and start being cute.
Oh jeez, my geek is showing, lol.

Did you read The Passage? It was pretty scary. There's a sequel coming out, and I heard they're making it into a movie.
