Niall Ferguson's new book, ‘Civilisation:The West and the Rest’: , carries a quote from a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in which he tries to account for the success of the West, to date.

He said: “One of the things we were asked to look into was what accounted for the success, in fact, the pre-eminence of the West all over the world.

“We studied everything we could from the historical, political, economic, and cultural perspective. At first, we thought it was because you had more powerful guns than we had.

“Then we thought it was because you had the best political system. Next we focused on your economic system.

“But in the past twenty years, we have realised that the heart of your culture is your religion: Christianity. That is why the West is so powerful.

“The Christian moral foundation of social and cultural life was what made possible the emergence of capitalism and then the successful transition to democratic politics. We don’t have any doubt about this.”

Nor do we Christians in the West have any doubts about this. Regrettably, there are idiots who if they had their way would eradicate Christianity

I think one of the reasons why the west has been dominant these last few hundred years was the remaining pagan Greco-Roman heritage it rediscovered during the Renaissance. It expoited this theoretical knowledge to practical ends for its advantage.
But much of this inheiritance was deliberately destroyed and suppressed by Christianity/the church in the preceeding Medieval and Dark Age periods. An enormous amount of learning and culture has been lost as Christianity sought to destroy paganism with it`s pre-eminence in the Roman Empire.

Christianity has made many moral/theological compromises with capitalism since the Reformation broke the absolute power of the Catholic church, and seriously diluted it`s original message. It has changed greatly over the centuries. I think it`s original form was inimicable to the progress of the last few centuries in Europe as it supported a stable, inward looking, authoritarian, agraian, theocratic society. For example it`s millenial ban on the dissection of cadavers until the early nineteenth century;it`s opposition to lending money and charging interest until the seventeenth(?). But a very select,Protestant form of the religion since then is relevant here, with it`s 'work ethic',etc. However, that does leave out about three quarters of all Christianity`s denominations: Roman Catholic,Orthodox, other small, eastern sects, and so on.Christianity as a source of western success is a very mixed proposal.
But the west has paid a high price for this apparent 'success'.

I think the argument from the Chinese is also rather convenient for them because it emphasises the values of the west as the source of their failures, instead of concentrating on their own shortcomings.

I think another reason for the west`s public 'success' is it`s sheer brutal ruthlessness in it`s dealings with the rest of the world. We did simply use our bigger, better guns more.

yes it is on the rise and has been for some time now. of course the gov't does its level best to stamp it out.

it is estimated that there are over 120M today with close to 80% being unregistered and therefore subjected to gov't persecution.

And, of course, Christianity is a marvelous excuse to dehumanize and treat like shit indigenous peoples and imported Africans who could be looked down upon as being non-believing savages.

Two ways to think about this quote:

    1. The Chinese couldn't be happier that Jesusland is so big. It makes it so much easier for them to catch up.
    2. Suddenly, a single member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is speaking for a billion of Chinese.

As a devout Christian, I'm not sure I am comfortable with the premise that faith gives one portion of the human race an advantage over another. Indeed, if the gospel truly is about serving others, it may well be an economic or political disadvantage.

To me the chinese seem to only be interested in money, power, and being cheap. I don't see them as a religious class of people since they mainly care about themselves or their families.

Wow, such hate in this thread. I am disappointed in my Christian brothers for hiding the love of God and of neighbor in masks of hurtful and barrier-inducing language.

As for the non-Christian haters, I hope you might find some love in your life that is worth sharing in these forums. I also hope that you and we might find some way to respectfully share our opinions and live peacefullly together in this world.
