The most shocking thing in this story from the Michigan Messenger about the influx of homeless people in Traverse City isn't about people dying of frostbite under a bridge. It's the fact that Anthony Ciccone, one of Madonna's older brothers, has been homeless for a year and a half.

I'm going to assume you're being cheeky and ironic by saying the most shocking part of the story is that Madonna's brother is homeless.

Why? It´s certainly the most remarkable part of the story.

Yes it is remarkable but is it the complete story of why her brother is homeless? The thrust of the story seems to be more about how this town is out there in a big way for the homeless. If it were about her brother than they may have included more information about him.

Sadly and tragically, in the richest country in the history of the world, homeless people die every day from exposure, disease, starvation, murder, police, etc. so it is NOT remarkable.

I actually think that for a small story it covers a lot of ground. Besides what has already been mentioned, what resonates with me is that people that you might not expect to be in this situation can fall into it. Scary.

Hmmm, I refer you to the dictionary.

re·mark·a·ble   /rɪˈmɑrkəbəl/ [ri-mahr-kuh-buhl] 1.notably or conspicuously unusual; extraordinary: a remarkable change. 2.worthy of notice or attention.

The fact that a rich person's brother is homeless is remarkable, but not the most remarkable part of the story. Probably the reason he was included at all is for the press value of his name to get more attention for the story.

Madonna's brother was just included for the shock value to get more readers. We have no idea what the situation is. If he was fired by his own father, then there is probably much more to the story. He may not be the victim he's making himself out to be. I could speculate wildly that he had a problem with drugs or alcohol or something, but I don't know any more than anyone else.

I didn't find the story so depressing as many of you seem to have. The reason that homeless people are flocking to that area is because they have such good resources for taking care of them. That should be an encouraging thing, but people seem to enjoy only seeing the negative side. Homeless is tragic, but there is no simple solution to the problem.

I don´t find it at all surprising or tbh even shocking that a country which doesn´t provide healthcare to its citizens and prominent politicians blame the unemployed for not having a job leaves people to die in the cold.

    Look at it objectively.

You know, sometimes siblings don't get along, so just because Madonna is a global superstar, it doesn't mean that she's gonna support him (or that she has to).

There are countless people in our country who have no health insurance and they know exactly where to get their free health care. They turn up at hospital emergency rooms - and I'm told by nurses that this is happening all over the country.

As far as homeless shelters serving food and offering hot showers and clean beds: These are available in many cities and counties with one caveat - - you have to be sober. If these druggies insist on staying high or drunk, they get turned away from shelters. They can't have it both ways. Either stay clean and sober - and try to better yourself - or keep getting loaded every single day and wonder why the shelters boot you out.

What does Madonna do with all her money? Her brother must have done some really heinous things to end up homeless, because I can't think of any other reason why she wouldn't help him out. Even if he had a drug/alcohol problem, he's still her family. So either Madonna is a cruel, heartless Scrooge or her brother is a giant douche.

    That was a different brother

EDIT: I knew it, you're Latino, for us Latinos, even if your relative is a douche or the worst person ever, you can't do anything about it , cuz they're family, I hate that attitude, if the relationship is toxic, it doesn't matter if he's family, you have every right to cut them out of your life. /endrant

Sounds like time for an intervention. I bet Madonna reaches out, now that it's in the media spotlight. If that's what it takes, so be it.

I think everyone is jumping to the conclusion that it was Madonna and the rest of the family that cut him off. My experience with my own relatives that suffer from substance abuse and/or mental illness is that they often isolate themselves voluntarily. Some people just don't want to be helped and try to get as far away from those that want to help them as possible. Or I could be wrong, he might be a colossal asshole and his family just hates him that much.

Madonna rejects her Italian American/French-Canadian American family, it does not fit with her Anglo-Saxon British lady persona.

Maybe her brother sent her hydrangeas once.

note: I'm just being sarcastic and silly...

    Just FYI, from the article:

ArticleCiccone said he’s been among the city’s homeless for a year and a half since losing a job at his father’s vineyard and winery in Suttons Bay. He said that it annoys him that some people are amused that a person from such a high profile family would end up sleeping, as he does, under the Union St. bridge.

“My family turned their back on me, basically, when I was having a hard time,” he said. “You think I haven’t answered this kind of question a bazillion times — why my sister is a multibazillionarie, and I’m homeless on the street?”

He's making it sound like they kicked him out. I'm sure there is more to the story.

Living among one of the largest concentrations of homeless people in the country, I think homelessness often has more to do with untreated mental illness than it does lack of money, resources, or ambition. You see homeless people who were at one time quite accomplished (Harvard Law grads, etc). Our country already has issues with health care in general, but that issue is further complicated by the extreme difficulty in treating people with mental illness who don't want to be treated. Often they feel nothing is wrong with them and threat of physical harm is about the only thing that can get someone involuntary treatment.
