I hate to say it, but I agree with Krauthammer on this particular point.
http://dailycaller.com/2011/10/22/krauthammer-down-on-herman-cain-he-is-winging-it/Say what you want about former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain’s presidential bid and his missteps along the way, but it’s hard to argue with results: Cain has an edge in the average of the major polls, and even picked up a straw poll victory in Nevada on Friday.

But that doesn’t impress syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer. In his regular appearance on the Fox News Channel’s “Special Report” Friday, Krauthammer castigated Cain — mainly for his confusing response on the abortion issue on “Stossel” on the Fox Business Network earlier this year.

“[I] saw him on ‘Stossel’ on abortion — entirely incoherent,” Krauthammer said. “On one hand, ‘people ought to have choice.’ On the other hand, ‘life is sacred from the beginning and abortion ought to be illegal.’ This isn’t a complicated issue. It’s one or the other. It can’t be both.

“Stossel was simply stunned. And if you combine it with the ‘9-9-9’ stuff, it is not that he just hasn’t thought it out. He is winging it. And that is a real problem.”

...and he has been doing it since 2003.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1011/66571.htmlHerman Cain has used an impressive bag of rhetorical tricks to avoid being pinned down on most questions that can't be answered with "9-9-9." His typical dodge involves describing an issue as very complicated, pointing out that he would want to take advice from a lot of different people, and sometimes - as in the case of most foreign policy questions - saying that he can't really give a complete answer until he has access to classified intelligence.

A 2003 interview Cain gave to Human Events confirms this isn't a new shtick — he's been evading basic political questions at least since he ran for Senate in his home state of Georgia.

You might also hate to acknowledge it, but this critical comment was on Fox by a Fox regular.

Krauthammer's point is that Cain isn't conservative enough and just winging it on critical conservative issues. He would much rather have a bona fide social conservative like Santorum or Bachmann be on top.

In a sense, such nebulousness in principles is a plus. At least that tells us Cain is listening in his own way. Someone like Santorum, in contrast, has closed his mind and disregards the majority viewpoint, e.g. on gay marriage and DADT.

On the other hand, every time I watch him I get an overwhelming sense of doubling down even after being shown to have painted oneself in the corner...even on "friendly" turf like Fox News. And you get statements like it's a "choice" to break the law after a rape, once abortion is outlawed by him.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I have been thinking since his meteoric rise to the top of the polls. I can’t think of a better way to put it than “winging it”.
