    WTF People?
I'm seeing this again and again all of a sudden
Is this the new thing in homophobic attacks?

First there was the man who was beaten and set ablaze in Africa

Then there was a gay man doused with lighter fluid and set on fire in Pennsylvania

and lastly a man in Scotland was tied to a lamp post and set on fire

It's called people being infected by the "setting gays on fire" meme.

Seriously, people (drunk or not) need to stop setting anybody else (drunk or not) on fire.

It's no more of a trend then the "Arabs Setting Themselves Alight" non-trend that happened last year:

You have 7 billion people around the world constantly doing fucked up shit and once in a while, by chance, similar events will coincide.

Sort of like the "give a million monkeys a million typewriters and eventually you will get Macbeth" thing.

    Or not.

    I don't know.

I just hope it stops soon, but it probably won't.

BAME has a point. We would need to compare straight people being set on fire to get a decent sample.

But please, no talk of memes. Memes do not exist.

i'd love to see the thought process behind this....how one goes from THAT DUDE LIKES PENIS to KILL IT WITH FIRE.

i seriously wonder how the fuck humanity hasn't managed to wipe itself off the planet yet.

Well, the term "faggot" did originate from the term used to describe a bundle of wood used to burn gay men back in the day... that possibly explains a connection?

    Good Omens reference.
"What's this here," [the guard] said suspiciously, "about us got to give you faggots?"

"Oh, we have to have them," said Newt. "We burn them."

    "Say what?"

    "We burn them."

The guard's face broadened into a grin. And they'd told him England was soft

They weren't used just to burn gay men, faggots were bundles of wood for fuel (& big meat-balls but I don't think there's a connection, although the idea of big meaty balls..........).

Actually, that's where the word "flamer" came from.
A "faggot" is a bundle of sticks. A "flaming faggot" is a gay man being burned on the bundle of sticks.
The terminology dates back to the witch hunt days.

I grew up in one of the oldest towns in the country. We burned a witch back in the day.

I grew up in a rural redneck town. We burned ants with magnifying glasses back in the day.

Truth. I think it's been established that the second was- for lack of a better term (but to be polite)- an accident. I mean- come on- drunk violent idiots exist everywhere. I've seen them myself at a party or two, and well- we all remember what happened in Vancouver last spring.

Two More Gay Men Set On Fire; This Time in Gay Bar
POSTED BY KEVIN FARRELL ON OCT 27, 2011
Detective Inspector Simon Preston said: “One of the men has suffered significant injuries to his face and body, although the facial injuries are the worst.
“They are not life-threatening, but they will be life-changing because he will require a number of operations and possibly skin grafts because of the injuries to his face. This was a horrific incident which has resulted in one person receiving significant burn injuries and the other with injuries to his hands

Immolation and self-immolation have been around for a long time. It's a pretty common hate crime for all groups.

This case is getting so much press and attention that if this does not turn out to be a homophobic hate crime but instead some kind of dispute between gay men we are going to once again within a week look like we are just jumping to conclusions without knowing the facts. We now know the Pennsylvania case is very likely not a gay hate crime. This new case took place within a gay bar and the flammable liquid used was probably liquor. Police are not at this time treating it as a gay hate crime and Leicester's local gay community organization has been stressing that point. If we keep this up and report every act of violence against a gay person as a hate crime before we know the facts we risk the real cases of homophobic hate crimes not being taken seriously by the public.
